Match report
Match report - Aldenham vs London Leopards Sunday May 18
We can only get better! Such was the loss of form of the mighty parish that this game needs to be consigned to the bin of history. And the improvement curve starts from now. The London Leopards duly won the toss and batted on one of Aldenham’s typical early season, top of the square airport runways with an inevitably mind-bogglingly short boundary on the pavilion side. For some (unfathomable?) reason the opposite boundary had also been radically shortened (to balance up the boundary symmetry perhaps), leaving it one of the tastiest parish pitches to bat on for years.
Things started going pear-shaped for ACC when skipper Itty Haq limped off in the first few overs with a severe hip strain and took no further part in the match. Thus began a very tough and forgettable day in the field for Aldenham facing an oppo skipper who insisted on batting out the statutory 40 overs despite the fact they were on 330 for 3 by the 30th over - and, what’s more, in the teeth of requests by the fielding side that they should declare - it was after all meant to be a Sunday friendly.
Our demise was caused by London Leopards’ kami-kaze no 3, one Mr Ahmad, who promptly and airily dispatched anything short, slightly short or on a length one bounce or none over the boundary. One of the few balls he did seem at all at sea with was a high looping delivery dropping down on his torso which he could only slog high into the stratosphere, waiting in vain for someone to gobble it up during what must have seemed like catching practice out in the middle to any random spectator. Sadly for around 10 or more times no one gobbled this guy and the parish allowed him to reach 198 before off-spinner Pranav Bhosle got him lbw to end the torture.
All in all, Aldenham dropped some 22 catches - the scorers couldn’t keep up - so catching practice must surely now be mandatory before all matches. Ironi"cally. One of the few exceptions was a tremendous boundary catch by all-rounder Perry Barnes, only to be cancelled and a 6 signalled instead when the opposition shouted out that he had pushed his back foot over the boundary while taking the catch.
Yep, it really was just one of those days! The Leopards were a strong batting side, no doubt (436 for 7 off 40 overs). Eventually we staggered off the field, taking a much-needed tea break to massage heavily bruised egos before bravely going out again to bat. It was here that the home side started giving some pay-back. We hit 81 in our first 10 overs - but we were four down.
Then came cameo performances to show how infuriatingly benign that rain-starved pitch was: Adam Haq knocked up a fine 21 in a partnership mainly with skipper Dush (18), Ebay hit 28 and that man again, Perry, top-scored with 46 to clinch Aldenham’s man of the match slot. We literally raced to 100 after 13 overs before wickets started tumbling and, with 10 overs to go, we were sadly all out for 180.
Never mind, lads, that’s cricket and there is always next week - and lots of time to practice!
