Match report Saturday 11th May
Herts League - Division 6B
50 overs
Hatfield & Crusaders II vs Aldenham

The As made the trip to Hatfield for the first league game of the season against familar foes, having faced the same opposition in a 50 over warm up game the Saturday before. Unfortunately the result did not materialise in the same way as the previous week.

Chris lost the toss and the As were put in to bat on a patchy wicket. Ebay and Ammo opened the batting, and started in watchful style as a very accurate Hatfield attack made it difficult to rotate the strike. Other than a blast over mid off from Ammo, runs were proving hard to come by and eventually the pressure told as Ebay was bowled for 6 from 36.

Levers coming in with a nose bleed at 3 was watchful, and Ammo tried to start opening up at the other end. However the ball was not coming on to the bat, and after attempting to force the pace Ammo was caught in front, triggered in muted style by the opposition umpire. Kuz joined Levers in the middle, and at this point Hatfields evergreen left are spinner was wheeling away, and eventually would run through a middle order of Kuz (7), the uncustomarily tamed Chris (0) and Itty (5). Raj was removed at the other end and the As were reeling at 77-6.

Levers watched many batting partners come and go, some resistance came from Khurram (3) in a partnership of 15, and Gautam (2), however no one could really get going and the innings was threatening to end with a whimper. Levers managed to muscle the odd boundary, and Vik came in with a well made 11, however both were eventually bowled leaving Wardy on 0*.

Aldenham 116 all out from 43.1 overs. Levers 30, Ammo 17, Vik 11

After some inspirational words from skip, the As set about trying to defend a below par total. Ammo & Levers opened up, and Ammo struck early removing the main batting resistance from the previous weekend in Barry Phillips for 2. Levers was in good rhythm and creating lots of play and misses, and chances going through the slip region. Eventually one went to hand, with skip catching a sharp chance at first. Itty would also take a sharp chance, however the #4 was dropped by Chris although the ball was travelling.

Raj was introduced and started and picked up some quick wickets, however extras were flowing as the As struggled with the leg side wides rule in 6B, and the #4 Bond was taking advantage of any loose deliveries. Vik was introduced and started in wayward fashion, however then bowled a peach of a yorker on the #4 toes, and we had a breakthrough.

Khurram and Wardy replaced Vik and Raj, but the runs left were running out. Wardy managed to get a wicket with a sharp chance caught at slip by Vik, but Hatfield managed to squeeze some singles through the close in field, and eventually got to the required total with 2 wickets and 17 overs to spare.

A tough start to the league season, but some heart to be taken from the fight with the ball and in the field, plus stoic resistance from Levers with the bat.

Hatfield 117-8 from 33 overs - Raj 3-24, Levers 2-30
