Match Report
ACC V Washington
Sunday 21 May 2023
On yet another not so glorious May Sunday and having come off two back-to-back wins the ACC were looking to extend their unbeaten record and having lost the toss the chairman and King Maj opened the batting on a dry but greenish track.
Maj in his typical style dispatched the openers for a six with a textbook driver and a beautifully placed four between the keeper and first slip with a textbook nick in the first few overs. A further series of west Indianesque shots quickly took his tally to 30 and the total to 36 of the first 6 overs before the chairman was caught at mid-on.
The one or two not so quickish singles during the previous 10 overs had seemingly taken their toll on our Maj. Failing to move an inch due what could only be described as sheer exhaustion, he was hit on the pads plum in front of middle stump by the opposition first change spinner. Levers quickly followed with an unfortunate mistimed top edge at mid wicked. Succumbing, just as the chairman had done, to the infamous uneven bounce of the ACC pitch.
It was now up Paul and Wardy to keep the innings on track. Both batsmen kept the score board ticking along nicely. Unfortunately though Paul was prematurely bowled for 16 as he was just beginning to find a rhythm. Wardy, after managing to keep the Washington attack at bay with solid a performance worthy of any test match was stumped shorty after for a hard-fought 14
The in-form man himself Mr. Ebay Khalique was in next and he did well scoring 24. With the help of James they managed to be put very decent middle order partnership together. Sadly though Beazely was caught for 26 and in the final few overs in a frenzied rush for runs, EBay was run out.
However all this had seemingly being to prelude to a fireworks finale. Not a person who believes in getting his eye-in under any circumstance, let alone with less than 2 overs to go, Itty did what Itty does best; 3 huge sixes, all straight down the ground, of the final 3 bowls moving the score to respectable 195.
As they clouds finally opened up and the hallowed turf of the home of cricket was basked in glorious sunshine Khuram and the “wolf man” Sheikh opened the bowling. Both did well to stop the opposition’s opening pair getting into any sort of rhythm. With the fall of the first wicket and both batsman struggling to play our opening due it started to seem that Washington were beginning to lose all hope of mounting any sort of challenge in front of their very large contingent of traveling fans who were enjoying what was turning out to be a beautiful afternoon.
The spin and seam combination of our opening attack was replaced by the pure pace and aggression of Jimmy B with two quick wickets in his first over and Levers bowling a tight line along with some uncharacteristic tidy fielding all around kept the visitor’s score to a mere 45 for 4 at the midway point.
The drinks break brought along with it in change in attached. All-rounder extraordinaire EBay bamboozling the Washington’s middle order batsmen with his unique style of bowling managing 4 wickets for only 18, making him a firm favourite for the man of the match award as well an early candidate for a most improved player of the season.
With the finishing line in sight Khuram & King Maj were brought on to sweep up the tail and bring a victorious end to yet another brilliant team performance for our Sunday side.
