Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report ‘Lots of rain last night!’
‘Is it still on?’
‘Forecast looks awful’ were just a few comments we all woke up to but thanks to the efforts of ACCs ground staff and Haiku specialist Barry Letts, the game was ON!

Needing to let the pitch dry out for as long as possible, the A’s decided to turn up after the 11 30 meet time but well before any of the Globetrotters. This meant the game was going to be decided in a 30 over smash.

‘Get to 200 off 20 and see where we are’ were the instructions given to openers Char and Sach who were ready to do battle on the slightly damp deck. A couple of early reprieves and some horrendous calling from our train specialist meant the As were going to struggle to hit their skippers target. 3 drops, some boundary hitting, frequent bowling changes and the constant changing of fielding numbers (kid at either end being backstop) meant it was all happening at the parish!
The openers kindly let their teammates have a bat after their stand of 46 meant Paul and Deepak could show what they were made of. Some impressive looking strokes were unfortunately unrewarded due to the damp deck meant the home team needed to up the rate. Maybe the skipper gave the nod as his usual lower order slot was looking unlikely to be required? This could only be the reason when he raised his finger to a hopeful LBW appeal!Unlucky Paul. We all heard you hit it…
Due to the ferocious speed of the game I cannot tell you what we were on after 20-25 overs but thanks to some late order hitting from Majid, Ally and Ubaid resulted in the hosts putting 143 on the board from their allotted 30.

The As took to the field in pursuit of victory starting with the soon to be Sheikhwolf and Char who hadn’t done enough this weekend.
Some tidy work from them and fielders saw the run rate gradually increase and the win was on. Howling through his spell, Sheikhy was making it talk claiming some early wickets and gave his side some chances. It wasn’t his fault his skippers standards weren’t at the same level as a regulation knick found his chest rather than hands…
The game was in the balance and the crowd numbers were growing so it was a little strange why the OMOA was seen leaving. A controversial altercation between him and the Globetrotter captain meant the the game had an extra bit of spice. Knowing we ‘weren’t going to see them here ever again’ the attention turned back to the cricket as both results were possible.
Pulled hamstrings, runners in football boots and league standard umpiring meant Aldenham needed something special to get the second W of the weekend. Chances came and went but unfortunately we came up a little short as the Globetrotters got was they wanted soooooo much and got to celebrate with a team photo from all angles of the Hallowed turf.

Maybe a longer game was needed?
Maybe we should have called it off in the morning?
Maybe we should have done a bit better to win?

Either way….Cricket was the winner!
