Match report On the final Saturday before the start of the league, Aldenham turned up to Hatfield & Crusaders full of enthusiasm as a bright and warm spring morning came to a close, ready to blow the winter cobwebs away and get stuck in to a summer of centuries, five wicket hauls and sensational catches.
Aldenham batted first, with Andy Tyrer and Mike Ward opening up. Unfortunately the early enthusiasm didn’t last long, as Andy T offered stiff resistance for all of two balls before being clean bowled attempting to play a hook shot to a ball that hit halfway up middle stump.
Mikey hung around a little before being bowled for 2 off 12 balls. Always one to look on the bright side he exclaimed that he was just happy he hadn’t scored a duck!
The wickets kept tumbling with Sach bowled for 2 of 26, Majid for 0 of 5 balls, Dipen for 1 off 8 balls and Ubaid for 0 off 17. It was quite clear that this pitch was as dead as a dodo and we were not able to cope with it!
We were now 20 for 6 off 9 overs with many wondering what they were going to do with the rest of their day once this car crash was over.
At this point, skipper Chris Munroe and James Bazeley were at the crease, both of whom suddenly started to make batting look easy. Chris was knocking it around well, including a beautiful late cut for 4, whilst James was off the mark with a 6.
James was out for 8, bringing Itty to the crease who was keen to up the tempo. Two sixes later he was bowled for 18, leaving the score at 66 for 8.
Shafique came to the crease and took part in an incredibly gritty 9th wicket partnership of 59 with the skipper, contributing 24 runs off 45 balls before being bowled. Chris was finally caught for a wonderful 69 off 72 balls giving Aldenham a final score of 142 off 38 overs. A truly remarkable comeback from 20 for 6!
After the interval, James and Ubaid opened up and bowled incredibly tightly, including 4 maidens and 1 wicket (Bazeley trapped the opener LBW in the 3rd over) in the first 6 overs. We were starting to realise that on this pitch, 142 might not be a bad score at all!
Ubaid struck again in the 8th over, bowling their number 3 for only 4 runs leaving the score at 16 for 2. Hatfield’s third wicket partnership was a good one, including 49 runs off 11 overs before being broken by Shafique bowling their number 4 for 20.
Mike Ward also picked up a couple of wickets, including a great stumping of the opening batsman by Itty, bringing the score to 83 for 5 off 26 overs, but unfortunately, some powerful hitting from Hatfield’s 6 and 7 brought the game to a quick close only 5 overs later.
Whilst not the ideal result, it was really pleasing to see such a fightback after an early batting collapse, along with some very tight bowling that kept Hatfield behind the run rate for a significant proportion of their innings. Lots to ponder and work on for the weeks ahead, but regardless of the result, what a joy to be out playing cricket again!
