Match report Match Report: Aldenham vs NorthWest CC - 15/08

Aldenham continued to contribute to the fight against the global rise of veganism by putting duck well and truly back on the menu in a high scoring affair against NorthWest CC.

The day started ominously for Levers as, for the second time in two days, he had a caught behind not given before Barry Letts continued doing more talking than catching in the slips cordon. Fortunately, first change pair of Joe Rogers and Ubaid Khaliq finally made inroads into the NorthWest batting line up with Joe bowling his best spells in Aldenham colours (8-2-20-3). Dicky D also bowled with control using every ounce of experience to claim a wicket and control the tempo of the NorthWest innings.

The great American author and social activist Letty Cottin Pogrebin once said that, “We need old friends to help us grow old and new friends to help us stay young.” I don’t think she was talking about fresh players joining a cricket club but how energising it was to have Shane Taylor and Andy Tyrer buzzing around the outfield with boundless enthusiasm. Shane took an excellent catch in the gully and Andy attacked the ball with relish throughout the afternoon. These are the sort of blokes we need to encourage and hold on to so buy them a beer or something.

The NorthWest batsman accelerated hard towards the back end and eventually set a daunting 241-7 off their 40 overs.

The ACC reply started shakily with the Chairman and Andy Jackson falling early. Andy T and Ubaid steadied the ship and played some glorious shots to keep the parishioners up with the required rate. With Jane providing some excellent ‘cups of tea’ things were looking up but then, disaster, Andy T fell looking to launch the off-spinner into the social club and his demise heralded a remarkable collapse with the middle order of Shane, Barry and Levers all recording ducks. This brought Itty to the crease who promptly smeared the NW bowling attack to all corners of the home of cricket. His 39 off just 15 balls took the pressure off Ubaid who soon brought up his 50. With Itty falling, Joe Rogers continued to advance the score with a well-compiled 31 which brought ACC within touching distance of the finish line. There was work to do, however, as ACC only had 10 and it was left to last man Dicky D to support Ubaid and get us over the line. Unfortunately, he too fell for a duck (the 5th of the innings). Fortunately, sofa king Raj Chandel had just arrived from work to support. He was hurriedly rushed into his pads, told to finish his beer and sent in to salvage the match. A couple of lusty blows from Raj and Ubaid carried ACC to a remarkable win, Ubaid finishing on 92* - well batted.
