Aldenham Cricket Club v Washington on Sun 18 Apr 2021 at 12:30
Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs
Match report
It all came out in the Wash
Aldenham slip to a first defeat of the season in close encounter at the sun-soaked parish.
Washington C.C. Beat ACC by 21 runs in 40 over match 18.04.2021
M.O.M James Bazeley’s opening knock of 65(85) wasn’t enough to chase down Washington’s total of 213-8 on a glorious day at the home of cricket.
The visitors set their total in a controversial first innings that saw the full spectrum of village cricket, in a season without the prelude of winter nets and at times it showed.
Stiff and erratic opening spells from Tim Hale(1-22) and James Bazeley(0-32) respectively got the game up and running. Leavers removing opener Hatton for a duck, who at the time of writing is nearly over the decision. Both Bowlers came back with second spells of sweaty quality.
Wash’ upped the anti in the middle overs with new comers Hayden Neilson and Danny Firth taking a little more tap than they would have dreamt of the night before.
Wash’s left-handed No.3 Eoan (66-3) held the innings together and Khan at 5, aiming for the car park and finding it regularly in his 66 off not many, put the home side under pressure in a game changing partnership.
Go to, slow right arm middle over specialist bowler Micky Ward and sliding enthusiast Ubaid Khaliq slowed the rate and were backed up by impressive debutant Callum Taylor who was involved in a wicket with his first ever delivery for the mighty parish side.
Patient Eoan was at one stage run out, by Bazeley, half the way down the track, but demonstrations about a fielder shouting “he’s out” after an LBW appeal, that apparently rendered Eoan momentarily paralysed, prompted the umpire to question to the captain if the home side were “playing properly”. The left hander was recalled to quash any accusations of foul-play. The number 3 was then given not-out in a close stumping before being bowled by Kuz “I need to go to Macdonald’s Chrissy” Barot.
Socially Distanced BYO-Sarnies were consumed and the ACC innings got off to a horror start with Yorkshire born, top fielder, Danny Firth nicking off first ball of the innings. Shortly followed by No.3 Andy Jackson, who got one that kept very low, without troubling the scorers, leaving the home side 4-2. Opening Bowlers Skipper Creed and always dangerous Luke Mitchell will be pleased with their spells.
Opening bowlers Bazeley and Hale (18 from 26) steadied the ship with a mixture of clean hitting, rusty mis-timing and quick singles before Hale was run out claiming “I just didn’t see the fielder” so thought he would stroll through for 1 and was comfortably run out. Another entry for the book of excuses.
The run rate slowed in the middle overs with some tight bowling taking the pace off the ball as the batsman struggled for timing.
When Ebay “Click Click” Khaliq 22(44) was bowled the required run rate was up at 8 an over.
Despite late gung ho efforts from punctually challenged Kuz Barot actually running and local hero, skipper and all round good guy Chris Munroe depositing a few in the field, the home side left themselves too much to do in the final overs. Desperation set in and stumps flew as The Wash’ romped home comfortable winners in the end, Aldenham finishing on 192-7.
A reasonably close and well matched game, played in good spirit in the sunshine was the perfect tonic for a winter spent locked up indoors.
We look forward to a new 2nd fixture in the mythical fixture card, against one of our favourite opposition later in the season.
Hopefully we’ve done lots of practice by then.
