Match report Aldenham vs. Lutonions II
Another glorious summer’s day greeted the parishioners and their opponents for the day, the latter having also not only received but even read the message to meet at 11am with a stringent warm up well under way as the stragglers from the home side rolled in. Team assembled the parishioners began their own warm up, as stringent for the slip cradle and Pichy’s thumb as anything else. In the meantime it was decided the home side would take to the field first up.

Levers kicked things off up the hill with Bazeley the Elder from the other end. Very tidy work from the pair for the first few overs, with the opener eventually letting his frustration get the better of him with a wild slash at a Jimmy B delivery that clattered into the stumps. His partner followed him back shortly after. No one was sure how, especially the man himself, but Captain Sidehats has plucked one (of the no doubt many red spheres hurtling towards him) one handed high to his right, take a bow son. Not long after Bazeley the Younger almost followed suit at backward point with another terrific effort but unfortunately could not quite hold on. Cue some gritty cricket from the away side, coupled with some excellent bowling from the home pacemen, Jimmy B finishing with figures of 9-2-12-2 with the full spell in one hit. Sheikh and Bake (Vikram) replaced the openers and continued the economical work with the score at 90-3 after 30.
The sun was perhaps beginning to take its toll on those out in the field, with the early high standards in the field beginning to slip a little and a couple of chances going down. Sheikh and Vik finished their sets of 9 with figures of 9-1-25-0 & 9-0-35-0 respectively. The two at the crease were now well set and began to accelerate the scoring with both passing fifty. The skipper brought himself on up the hill but found it tough going, Sheikh the unfortunate culprit of a missed chance out in the deep – having thought he’d seen G. Southgate having a quiet pint outside ASC went for the side foot trap to option stake a late Euros claim when under the high ball, brought it down well to be fair, potential long term tibia damage however. Levers was back on now down the hill, picking up a deserved wicket via the hands of Bazeley the Elder at long off. Chris picked up the other batsman who was going well via good work from Slaquey behind the stumps, then proceeded to pin the next man and their skipper in the face with a viscous length ball. This initiated some friendly chat between the batsman and our mild mannered keeper, as said the heat was probably taking an effect. Levers finished off with 9-1-48-1 with Ebay wrapping things up after with a couple of overs. A disappointing last third meant Lutonians made their way to 232-4. Game on.

The skipper and Ebay opened up; Chris nearly succumbing second ball with a drive to cover that was shelled. The following over and a sense of deja-vu, this time Ebay clicked, the keeper collected and Ebay was on his way back. Needs joined Chris in the middle and as is customary the skipper began to find the boundary. To the shock of the parish this was curtailed when the opener coming in off an ever shortening run ducked one back and disturbed Chris’ timbers. Pichy, thumb just about intact, arrived in the middle and the next few overs saw the going difficult with some tight bowling. Needs was back in the hutch reaffirming the ‘pad first’ theory still does not work. Pichy was not far behind courtesy of a nick behind bringing Bazeley the Elder and Levers to the crease. These two dug in as had their counterparts in the first innings and having weathered the storm began to open up after a few overs. After a few lusty blows Jimmy B ran past one to the delight of the away keeper who did the necessary from there. Levers ploughed on with an array of lovely shots around the wicket, bringing up a very well deserved half century before being cleaned up himself, no doubt fearful that the Severn Bridge might be closed before he could make it there. AJ and Bazeley the Younger managed to tick things over, AJ, like Sheikh, also having seen the England boss in the crowd, nodded one for four down to third man via a top edge. After a few cultured shots from Josh (still somehow wearing a jumper) he departed. Almost forgot Sheikh’s brief knock. Vik came and went to leave Slaquey to try and propel us to an extra bonus point or two. Only two outcomes possible first ball, hit out or get out, both were achieved with long off wrapping up the game for the away side. 131 all out the final total.
Not the greatest day for the parish but positives to take in the field, Jimmy B with an excellent spell with the ball and Levers a superb knock with the bat, the latter deservedly picking up MOM, even though I voted for Jimmy B. We go again.
