Aldenham Cricket Club v Old Cholmeleians II on Sat 15 May 2021 at 12:00
Aldenham Cricket Club Won due to better run rate
Match report
For the second week in a row, Parishioners were hanging on tenterhooks ahead of the game, waiting to see if they’d have the chance to extend a winning start to the league season against Old Cholmeleians. The less seasoned players refreshing naively their weather apps, hoping for good news. And then the clouds parted, and in no small part thanks to those working hard to make the track playable through the week, it was game on.
Missing some big stars with skipper Chris Munroe, league-lover Stephen Pich and the maverick Karan Barot all unavailable, ACC faced a tough task that became even harder as Skipper-for-the day Sachin “Sach” Sanghvi lost the toss – ACC were to pad up first and with just 10 players.
Mark Needham and Andy Jackson opened the batting. The former having been part of last week’s heroics in Little Berkhamstead with a half century alongside the big hitting skipper. Today however was tougher going, with Mark falling for 5 in the opening overs. The skipper entered the fray, only to find himself following in Mark’s damp footsteps after being caught on the same score. With Itty Haque out for a duck to the latecomer Pierre’s swift in-swinger, the pressure was building as Dan Knight came in - making his first appearance in front of his new girlfriend. Alas, it was a very quick display from the young Parishioner, Pierre striking again and Dan exiting on his third ball. Not the ideal early Birthday present.
5 wickets down and struggling to do much to disturb the scoreboard thus far, ACC needed to dig in. Ubaid Khaliq came in, and alongside opener Andy Jackson managed to steady the ship. Not the most entertaining few overs for those watching on, but ACC trickled into the 80s as the next two wickets fell.
In stepped Tim Hale, helping to hasten the run rate alongside Andy Jackson who fell just short of his first half century. Vikram and Sheikh Ahmed followed and the bowlers showed the batsmen how to do it, getting to a very credible 160 before falling just short of the 40th over. All to play for.
Fresh from their batting exploits, Vikram and Tim opened the bowling. Old Cholmeleians, their 47 all out the previous week fresh in their minds, started cautiously. They put on 7 runs in the opening 5 overs before bowling hero Pierre fell to Tim’s bowling. Off Pierre went to the car park to fetch his inflatable bean bag, and in came Thomas, straight into the firing line of Sheikh Ahmed who was making his first appearance of the season. Not too many cobwebs at all though, as both batsmen watched his bowling whistle by with little damage done featuring three maidens as they made it over the 50 mark. Debutant Rao’s bowling found Tim’s safe hands - 67-2 with 19 overs gone.
We had a match on our hands, but dark clouds were beginning to hover. Those in the deep struggling to see the action as the overs ticked to 26. And then came the real drama of the day. the heavens opened and players sprinted for cover. Match abandoned amidst the downpour and the debate began from the pavilion to Norfolk. Pete Munroe and club captain Chris engaged in a frenzied discussion to determine the day’s result. Lots of talk of ducks and Lewis or something along those lines, and plenty of handbooks passing hands. Then as all seemed consigned to a draw and players were well on their way for pub and homes alike, an ACC victory was announced. To top it off, the Parish would take top spot in division 8A after two league matches. Next up, a tough fixture against Pinner.
