Aldenham Cricket Club v Peshwa CC on Sat 11 Jul 2020 at 13:00
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
After the unprecedented events of the first half of this year, it was a fantastic sight to see The Mighty Parish back at the home of cricket in the sun!
The visitors for the first game of the 2020 season were Peshwa CC, a side that play in the Middlesex Championship in the same division as New Calypsonians, so a tough task. They brought with them the Chairman of the Championship who offered his services as umpire for the day, and their own scorer too. Well received and a nice bunch of guys, Levers perhaps another fixture next season?
Skipper for the day Wardy lost the toss and ACC were put in to the field. James B & Shakey opened the bowling, Sheikh typically probing, whilst James tended to bowl a little short and was punished early as the openers sat back on the back foot and swiped aggressively. Sheikh too had some punishment, but made the breakthrough with a snick behind to Needs, and a few overs later took two in quick succession, both bowled. James was replaced down the hill by his friend and debutant, the kitchen fitter Harry Wren. Harry came off a long run and slingshotted in to the crease, reminiscent of Simon Jones, and started well with a much fuller length, and caused issues for the batsmen early on. Alas despite a few near misses through the socially distanced gaps in the slip cordon, no more wickets were taken by Sheikh or Harry, Shakey bowling through his 8 overs for 3-45.
Joe & Dicky replaced Shakey & Harry, Dicky typically probing but bowled a touch short, but the batsmen struggled to get him away initially. Joe bowled tidly to the young batsman and managed to keep him at an end for a few overs, so the fireworks subsided, the field set out for the set #3 to give him a single. Joe and Dicky picked up a wicket apiece, Dicky however received some tap later in his spell to the short midwicket boundary.
Wardy was introduced, along with Harry coming back for a second spell. Wardy managed to find good control and not many runs were taken from him, but with the field set out there were singles on offer. Harry bowled with fire and picked up 3 late wickets, including a spectacular diving catch from Dicky on the deep backward square boundary as the batsman played and connected with a ramp shot. Wardy got some tap in the 38th over, so James was summoned to bowl the 40th. With one ball to go the #3 retired for a well made 71, and the #11 came in and smoked a James B slower ball over the long on boundary for 6.
Peshwa CC 207-8 from 40 overs, Wren 8-1-40-3, Ahmed 8-0-45-3
A socially distanced packed lunch consumed by all, and the retort began with Ebay & Matt A opening up. Ebay looked scratchy whilst Matt looked busy & was being fed his favoured crouching hook to the fine leg boundary, the bowlers struggling to adjust to the right hand / left hand combination. After a steady opening partnership of 39 off 10 overs, Matt skied one in to the covers and was caught. Ebay & then Levers for a GD (welcome back Levers) fell soon after, the As rocking on 40-3. Needs & Kuz steaded the ship and Kuz looked in good touch, however on only 14 Kuz guided the leg spinner to 1st slip.
Needs & James then set about the bowling, Needs particularly savage against the young bowler hitting to the short boundary for several 4s. After this Needs picked off 1s and 2s, however was shelled on about 30 on the midwicket boundary, a chance that would prove to be costly for the visitors. James played sensibly and waited for his chances to hit, and when these arrived he hit crisply, hitting 3 6's on his way to a well made 34 before being caught. Joe came in and swung the long handle, hitting a beaut of a 6 over long on before being caught next ball for 17. Harry then joined Needs and looked much better than the #8 Wardy had promoted him to. Needs resistance ended on a fantastic opening day 69. Wardy joined Harry and nudged a few singles, with 3 overs to go Harry hit a few 4s to win the game in the end comfortably.
A great team performance in the field and responsible batting throughout.
