Open University CC v Aldenham CC – Sunday Friendly – 20th April 2025

Inaugural Sunday Friendly fixture for the season 2025 and the summer sun welcomed us wholeheartedly 35 miles aways from the Parish.
Stand in skipper Dush was prompt by being first on the ground and also completing the toss well before time and also having the 11 arrived to play. Perhaps he knows and trick or two on early tosses to ensure we bat first, and bat first we did on a fantastic day for cricket in Milton Keynes.
His Majesty got the Sunday Parishioners off the mark; not something that could be said of him all last season, with a crisp boundary backward of point pacing a fiery delivery calmly to the fence. Deepak Sharma another stalwart at opening that batting was more sedate and took his time. The two veterans (by age) took the score to around 35 – 40 in first 9 overs before Maj sliced one to short cover.
This brought in Pavan, which literally means a pleasant breeze – he did bat like a storm though. Blazing boundaries and a six in a whirlwind partnership with Sharmaji to get Parishioners past 100 in not time. Raised his willow to a fine 50 off just 28 balls and kept going.
University finally got in a left arm wizard who started to run through the line up and the famous ACC collapse made its customary appearance which accounted for a frightful welcome to the club for the debutant. dear Pranav, who did not trouble the scorers. Skipper Dush then joined forces with the lower middle order and stood firm to calm things down and made a gritty 36 as a fine captain’s knock. Khurram and Hamza though held fort with some lusty yet fine hitting to take the score to a respectable 245 for 8 in 40 overs.
Out to defend, the ACC heroes Raj and the Wolf we hard to negotiate for the University, couple of their batters though did show determination but could not persist too much with Zubair the professor nagging with line and length and Pavan, the breeze, that knocked out the winds with 4 wickets on a trot to kill the chase. Hamza too accounted for a wicket for himself in the bargain.
ACC won by 93 runs to make a twin win weekend for the start of the mega 2025 season.
Report Card – out of 10
Deepak Sharma – 08
Great determination to see of the new ball, the chiropractor was at his best. Took a good grab at the slips too.
Maj – 07
Got off the mark – deserves an ovation but for a good effort to last till the 9th over of the innings a respectable 7.
Pavan – 10
A blistering innings and 4 wickets, you cannot ask more from an all-rounder. MOM performance.
Dush – 09
New skipper but also standing in, responsible batting, clean keeping, carrying everyone along and the team won. One mark deducted as could have scored a big one after settling in.
Pranav – 10
Choosing to join the Parish, in itself deserves the warmest welcome. There is always a next time and will have many more occasions to trouble the scorers. Ask Maj.
Zubair – 08
Perhaps must change the BDM manufactured cricket stick – they are the poorest of suppliers. Could not get off the mark but as always commitment like no other and steady medium pacers which are difficult to put away. Chirpy in the field too. Nice contributions to the team effort win.
Ubaid – 08
Unlike Zubair and Pranav did give the scorer some work to do by scoring the solitary run. But for getting the key lefthander’s wicket and doing well with his ground fielding – fine contributions to the team effort. Plus, the banter on why he could not hold on to the ball is always backed by science.
Khurram – 09
Fine innings 43 not out some good running between with wickets pushing the younger lot and crisp boundaries over covers and long off a the end of the innings. Stabilised the innings in a partnership with the skipper. One mark deducted for sitting out 5 overs at the start of the chase and little champion Jyan having to field. Next time match fees will be one pound for each over sat out.
Raj – 09
“After saying haven’t held a ball in a year for 83 times in the day”, comes up and picks up two caught and bowled as its no ones business by foxing batters with the induckers, was a great show. After the two drops decided to do it all by himself. Also, 3 hits to the fence while batting lower down the order provided much momentum to finish the innings. All round a good day for the sofa man.
Hamza – 08
Good contributions to the team performance with fine hitting at the end especially the six over sightscreen that lost the ball one ball before the end of the innings. However, could do much better with the ball next time onwards otherwise as always will have regular skipper Itty Haque in Maj’s ears at slip – “what’s wrong with him today”.
Sheikhy – 10
You cannot give Wolfy any less than 10; no matter what. The ultimate team man. Every game provides a fun moment. This game was as the umpires changed mid-way during his spell- after bowling an over asking eBay – “I need my helmet” – eBay flummoxed said “Sheikhy bhai we are bowling now why do you need a Helmet” – Shekhy says – The umpire took it with him. eBay then explains – We will get your cap back don worry!!
Great Sunday – Everyone got a game!! Cricket the winner!!
