Match report
Aldenham CC vs Flamstead CC – Herts Village Trophy quarter finals
Thursday 21st July
Two-time HVT winners, Aldenham CC, took on Flamstead CC in a slightly cooler quarter final. Victory today will take either team to finals day in Knebworth in September.
A weary ACC arrived with Liverpool lip making the 4 hour commute, Wardy complaining about staring at spreadsheets for 9 hours, Captain sidehats exhausted from hosting an indoor bbq from 5.30am, and levers coming off the back of a boozy training course in Leeds.
After marking out the 30yard circle, underdogs ACC (5 divisions below flamstead in the herts league) took to the field – Levers being given the responsibility of first over down the hill with the new nut. Wardy, fresh from his 5fer in the last t20 opened up the hill.
One Flamstead opener took a liking to both ACC openers, repeatedly hitting Levers into the carpark. Wardy struggled to find his length with the slippery new ball and still had a his mind on how to consolidate two cells in excel. after 2 overs each, Levers was replaced by Char Munroe, and Wardy replaced by Barry Letts. At this point Flamstead were going at 10 an over and a score of 200 was looking possible. That was until some excellent work in the cover region by Andy T, sliding to his right, picking the ball up and whizzing it in to Itty leaving the Flamstead batter 2ft short of his crease.
With the first wicket on the board, Char and Barry restricted the boundaries and slowed the run rate. Another fantastic piece of fielding by Barry in the deep by the pavilion – first of all managing to stop a four, and firing it in to Char who gleefully whipped the bails off to get the second wicket on the board. Char, picking up three wickets, restricted the middle overs whilst Raj also picked up three, and whose slower ball was so slow it looked like it was moving backwards.
A fine fielding performance only saw two drops, a tricky chance from Pichy, diving one handed for the cameras at mid-wicket, and ubaids VERY tough chance (one for the chin-up Barry). Some lusty blows towards the end off Levers’ bowling (why do I bother) left Flamstead on 155.
Regular t20 opening partners C Munroe and C Munroe took to the crease, C Munroe looking fluid and knocking the singles around to begin with. Whereas C Munroe struggled to guide the ball down to third man, attempting the shot 5 times in a row with no luck, his struggles continued before holing out for 14. B Letts joined C Munroe; a formidable partnership was formed between the two, putting fielders under pressure with quick singles to begin with whilst they found their rhythm, some big boundaries followed until C Munroe stuck one down long on throat to be caught on 38. Pichy, claiming t20 didn’t suit his playing style and coming off the back of a little finger injury, hit some glorious shots. A six over extra cover being a particular highlight.
Pichy and Barry upped the scoring rate in good style, with traditional cricket shots and not just swinging and hoping. Things were going a bit too smoothly so Barry decided to run out pichy with a few more runs to go. Itty Haque strode to the crease, it was either going to be over in a couple of balls or another batter will have to pad up. blocked one, clothed one to midwicket “NO. STRAIGHT TO THE FIELDER” itty shouted as it dribbled to mid wicket. next ball, straight to the mid wicket fielder but this time in the air. Andy T walked out with two runs needed, took one to the arm, and thankfully the over was finished leaving Barry to finish it off. Flamstead bowler chucks it down legside and the boys get a single to win, leaving the flamstead bowler with figures of 0.0overs, 0 wickets, 2 runs.
a heated discussion between barry and char ended the day with barry claiming ‘it’s so hard to win anything in this club unless your name is Munroe’
