Match report Match Report 30/07/22 – Aldenham CC vs St Albans III (HOME)

Turning up to the parish on a fine summer morning, all league players ready for a game and oppo we have often lost to in the past. Everyone on time thankfully and out preparing the square for what was to come. Baz on all fours knocking 3 hard points into the dry surface was the highlight of the preparation.

Toss won, batting first says Skipper Chris. Skip and Ebay to open up for the A’s. Opening bowling pair bowled tidy lines, taking the Skip off early with an in swinger hitting top of off. Baz in. Ebay going well with a few lovely stroked 4’s, being accompanied by Baz doing the same. While our 2 and 3 were out batting nicely, DK chirping up on the boundary with some jinxing expertise – “Feeling a Baz ton today” or “Pichy is going to smash it” were among the many he mentioned, as he whacked out what can only be seen as a full fruit salad bar. Back to the cricket. Baz hitting a quick fire 42 off 35, well batted, but getting caught at long mid-off. Pichy in…Pichy out. DK in joining Ebay in the sun. Together putting on a decent partnership. Going at a slow pace and losing too many valuable wickets early was not helping the run rate. Ebay is then run out, after putting 29 off 53 on the board. Levers and DK in, time to rebuild. Ball is skied, DK runs, ball is dropped, DK stranded, stumps hit, DK runout – a somewhat comical runout. DK runout for 13 off 30. Jimmy B in with Levers, many more to get and hopefully some big hitting to come – Tim going along nicely with boundaries all round the ground, hoping Jimmy B can contribute. Only to get caught in the slips. Jimmy B caught for 5 off 12. Here comes the BOOM! Itty in…Itty caught. Score still well under par, Vik comes in to join Tim. Vik getting a quick 7 runs then being given LBW, allows Wardy (The Wall) to join Tim. Tim finishing the innings getting caught, but hitting a needed 29 off 31 – well batted Levers.

145/10 on the board was not what we wanted, especially knowing what St Albans have hit against us in the past. I massive bowling and fielding performance required!

TEA TIME!

A quick turnaround led to a very positive team talk from the Skip – goal is to ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK! Both Itty and Pichy with pads on ready to come in close and put pressure on St Albans. Vik opening up at the top end, bowling full and rapid. Then Levers up the hill (He loves it!) bowling top of off. Vik strikes first with a yorker (5-1) – just the start we needed! Then coming up the hill soon after, Tim bowls, Baz dives!! Caught! (10-2). Could this really be! Their 4th comes in swinging, shortly after being caught at slip by Skip, well bowled Levers. The pressure really building for St Albans now. With our openers bowling out of their skins! (15-3). Game is so on. Vik again comes down the hill, pads are hit – everyone goes up, as does the umpires finger – pinch me, I must be dreaming! (16-4). 2 balls later, Vik bowls, batsman swipes at it and is caught at gulley by DK. CARNNNNNNN!! (16-5). What is going on? Have they reversed the order? Pimp replaces Slick Vik up top and hopes to keep up the incredible performance from the openers. Tim comes to his final over, he bowls, smashed towards midwicket, Pichy dives, but it’s dropped – that would have been a hell of a grab. Still goes down as a drop in the book. GD and a drop, sure he’s seen better days. St. Albans no.3 and no.7 push on. Pimp bounding down the hill takes out their 3rd batsman’s off stump. (40-6). Straight after comes the 7th, with a great catch from Vik at point off Jimmy B. (40-7) Hattrick Ball! Bowls outside off, batsman leaves it. Baz replaces Tim coming up the hill, bowling full and sharp to a decent no.7 bat. Time to clear up the rabbits and get to the pub. A partnership begins to build for St Albans; however the Pimp hits the pads and it’s given LBW. (74-8) Must be in the bag now. Again, a double wicket for Jimmy B, and their skipper is walking back to the Pav. Great catch from Levers at second! Last man at the crease. Michelle is still on. Wardy on at the bottom end, could take the maiden fifer away from Jimmy B. A solid madien over, but it comes back to the Pimp to finish it off. He gets the final wicket and his fifth with an LBW and caught behind shout, who knows what it was, but it was given! 83 all out.

What a game and an unbelievable win for ACC. Time for a pint.
