Aldenham Cricket Club v Wheathampstead II on Sat 14 May 2022 at 13.00
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 89 runs

Match report This match reporter was especially keen for the weekend of cricket having missed the previous two weeks so decided to get down the club at 10.45am for a 12noon meet time (even more keen was Sunday skip Barry Letts, who, not even selected for the game decided to come down and help with the pitch work). An hour and fifteen minutes later the rest of the ACC heroes joined with most of the jobs already completed.

With the sun shining, Pichy lead the ACC stars on a reluctant warmup around the boundary edge, ¾ of the way round and mid stretch, captain sidehats went off to do the toss – after announcing we were batting all warmups ceased to a halt – off to the pavilion to either stick some pads on or continue the warm up by having a cup of tea.

Familiar opening partnership Chris Munroe and Ubaid Khaliq took to the crease. A flat track and lightning outfield led to talks of another munroe ton before he’d even faced a ball. Both openers got us off to a steady start, both eventually falling in the 40’s (46 & 40 respectively). Club extrovert Karan Barot quickly joined league specialist S. Pich. Kuzza shortly departed for 11 after trying to chat up opposition player Cresslad. Scandinavian accountant and weekday partier DKD joined Pich at the crease, scored two runs then returned as he didn’t want to spend to long away from his GF.

Liverpool lip and ACCs top wicket taker and just all round top bloke (I’m still sorry for what I said in Nottingham last year), Charlie Munroe, joined Pichy in what could’ve quickly turn into a standard ACC collapse. The two steadied the ship, and a pichy ton was looking on the cards motoring along to 82. That was until chars inner scouse came out and whilst trying to run a quick two, char decided to deck pichy leaving them both stranded – pichy was run out by a direct hit from the boundary. As the two were on the floor, calls for ‘A MEDICAL PERSON’ (?) were shouted by one opposition player, confusion among the pavilion quickly dissipated as pichy took his glove off to find his index finger pointing in a different direction to the rest of his fingers. Katy Jackson whisked him away to hospital where it was soon straightened; he returned a couple of hours later with pint in hand. Levers joined char for some lower order hitting.

ACC 240 – 7 off 40OVERS

ACC took to the field to defend their slightly under-par score, with B Letts replacing Pichy in the field. Slick Vik opened down the hill, bowling with flowing locks and fluidity, picking up an early wicket. Levers opened up the other end claiming he’d work ‘all day long’ for the skip – it was hot and I was tired so it didn’t go that well.
After 4 overs Char replaced Vik and bowled nicely picking up two wickets off his 8 overs.
Wheathampstead were up with the scoring rate at around the half way stage – mutterings of ‘we could be in trouble here’ were starting to creep in. a miracle was needed. a game changer. a hero. that hero came in the unlikely form of Chris Hewett. Who, up until this point in the game was quite happy to field in the shade at third man. Some rumours have been flying around saying he’s got the yips, that he’s lost it. figures of 4.1 overs, 8 runs conceded and 5 wickets soon dispelled these rumours – 4 bowled and one LBW.
A 5 wicket haul and a MOTM later, we’re all lapping up the last of the sunshine surrounded by many jugs in the bar.

Onwards and upwards.
