Leverstock Green v Aldenham Cricket Club on Fri 30 Jul 2021 at 13:00
Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report Leverstock Green Cricket Week always brings a feast of village cricket and mid summer sunshine in late July. Alas not in 2021, a decent gazebo, a wrecked gazebo and a covered square was all the greeted the Parishoners together with a very large pavement pizza, a sign of a much drier Thursday evening. "Come inside and warm up Jerry" was the verbal greeting from Levi Green Hero and ex Bricket Wood Stalwart Richard Walker. A statement more apt for a December afternoon and not Midsummer. "No Rich i will brave it out here thanks mate"

Barry the Skip, just out of bed was next to rock up. "Jerry I am just living for the weekends at the moment". Obviously very keen for the game to go ahead despite the epicentre of Storm Evert circulating around HP3. One by one parishioner after parishioner turned up, just awaiting both DKD and Chrissy who were both stuck individually on the M25 at different times. An early start was never going to happen so watching a repeat of a recent poor standard Ladies Hundred was all that was on offer. "Baz do you think you would be of a similar standard to this" asked AJ. Barry took that comment in but didn't seem impressed. Though Barry did confide in the few that he did have a bit of a thing going on with the rather manly Nat Sciver???

Eventually a lull in the storm meant a game was looming, with Chrissy and DKD still on route ACC were inserted by the not to be argued with Richard Walker. "Do we play with the cover on or not" The decision was take it off, take it off. A team of 15 guys removed the tarpaulin cover. With enough rain laying on it ensuring every gust of wind soaked those in it's path, didn't it Barry?

The obvious opening partnership of Mikey & Steve "Grealish" Pich strode to the wicket. One glorious shot from Steve and then he picked out the fielder to fall for a 4 ball 6. DKD to the wicket and time to start leaving the ball to get his eye in??? Not the idea of the Hundred format surely. With Mikey also not piercing the field ACC ambled to 27 for 1 when the Heavens opened. Hot Tea in the pavilion and more Ladies Hundred to view.

After nearly an hours break and the decision to resume the game with the covers on track 1 DKD and Mikey restarted the ACC innings, Mikey's vigil coming to an end on 14 and the introduction of Chrissy. Chrissy's big hitting woke DKD out of his slumber as finally the shackles were off. Back to back 4's for DKD saw him retired for 34 quickly followed by Chrissy for 41. Dush and AJ were next in, Dush hitting a mighty six that hit the pavilion window where ACC's 2 brave spectators were positioned. AJ fell cheaply bring Jamie to the wicket. Jamie fell first ball meaning hat trick ball!! And who was in next Itty! The next ball missed the leg stump by a fraction. Dush fell LBW last ball for 9.

ACC 138 for 5

So now for the difficult part, bowling and fielding in the storm. And with the decision that each player bar the Wicket Keeper had to bowl! Mikey opened with a 10 ball over and then one ball into Raj's over the heavens really went, surely that was it at 14 for 0?? Unbelievably not, 30 minutes later we were back on as the pink ball was back in Raj's hand. A couple of dropped catches from AJ and a diving parry from the Skip meant a wicketless Raj and Parish. A tidy spell from DKD and a good ball from Pichy halted the run chase.

Next bowler to the crease was Jamie Cooper reeling from his Golden and his soon to be aired announcement that he was a good Chess Player. Chess and of course The Parish = just one thing Dr Death!!!!!! Jamie's 5 ball spell quickly doubled including our and his first wicket for the club. Well bowled sir!! Dush's spell was brief enough to bring Jerry the Pink Ball. A couple of singles were followed by a cocky youth reverse sweeping for 4. That was that, bowl a straight one, do a Dennis Lillee appeal and get the decision, 2 down.

What can follow that? AJ!! 3rd ball bowls one down the leg side, Richard Walker running 2 wides and Slacky having chased the ball to the boundary throws down the stumps!! Scenes!! Mikey nicked another wicket and it was anyones game. A couple of uncharacteristic misfields and an injury to Chrissy were very untimely. Skip having kept himself back needed to get us a few wickets but it just wasn't to be. Last over and DKD to bowl, Levi Green home with 3 balls to go.

Leverstock Green 139 for 6

Well done everyone for making today happen and preparing to play Cricket in some of the worst conditions ever.
