Match report Aldenham CC vs Harrow Wayfarers – 13 June 2021

You know it’s going to be an unusual day when you arrive at the ground only to find Sach, skipper of the day, liberally applying what he believed to be the new hand sanitiser “Hellfire” only to be told by Itty that it was actually his vaping liquid!

Fortunately for Sach three of his trusty lieutenants were marking the crease.

It’s really not that hard lads!
Harrow Wayfarers batted first on a blistering hot day and made short work of the Aldenham opening bowlers and at one stage a scope of circa 300 looked in the offing. The mighty A’s stuck to their task though and managed to keep Harrow in check, albeit to a very respectable 248 for 5 off 41 overs.
Ramesh was the pick of the bowlers, with a very ceditable 3 for 44 off 8 overs. He also took a stunning catch to pick up one of the opening batsmen. Dicky D. bowled a tight spell taking 2 wickers whilst Ubaid also chipped in with a wicket. Sacho marshalled his bowling resources very skilfully with seven bowlers sharing the burden.
Sadly the bowlers were rather let down by the fielders. Having taken a fine catch Dan Knight’s comment that “they are just sticking this year” were words he lived to regret as he then put down the next four chances that came his way. Still – a jugs a jug! A further four drops from his teammates made it eight in all – at least not a “Finchley fifteen”.
After the usual BYO tea the Aldenham innings got off to a flyer. The customary duck from the Chairman was followed by some mighty hitting by Itty, ably supported by Dushant (31) and with twenty overs to go the A’s only need a further 110 with three wickets down.
By this stage Itty was in full flow – although beginning to look a little weary. Quickly into the nervous nineties Itty continued his succession of attacking shots. At 97 he skyed one to long off only to be dropped by the skipper, who then repeated the same feat two balls later. A huge reprieve for Itty who then managed a further two singles to bring up an amazing 100. He eventually holed out for a scintillating 116, leaving the home side in striking distance of victory.
Unfortunately this was not to be, despite some lusty blows from Sach (22). In the end ACC put the shutters up with three overs to go to hold on for a draw, ending some 30 short, with eight wickets down, of what would have been an epic run chase.
After the usual jobs the teams retired to the bar to enjoy multiple jugs and the hero of the hour savoured the moment with the help of a tequila shot provided by the opposition. Hopefully he made it to work the next day!

Suspicions of match fixing though were confirmed when the oppo skipper – having been the fielder to drop Itty twice in the 90’s, was seen on his mobile phone talking to an unidentified contact in India about the transfer of a large sum of money!

Another memorable day at the home of cricket – one Itty Haque will never forget.
