Aldenham Cricket Club v Chipperfield Clarendon II on Sat 28 Aug 2021 at 12:00
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 75 runs

Match report Tour weekend had arrived at the Parish and an outside chance of promotion had TS Wardy running up huge numbers on his phone bill as he desperately tried to get a team out to avoid concession and a resulting points deduction.

Incredibly, from out of the woodwork, appeared a full eleven described by Vintage as the strongest Aldenham side ever seen playing cricket at The Home of Cricket on an August Bank Holiday Saturday. This early assertion was obviously the result of a hearty breakfast and a determination to score a barrel full of runs on his annual excursion.

Stand in Skipper Pichy lost the toss but fortunately Aldenham were put in to bat which calmed the nerves of a few of the Parish’s stand in heroes.

Ebay and Matt Anson opened the batting and made a solid start before eBay fell trying to ramp up the scoring, which brought Vintage to the crease in his customary first drop role, and what a treat he had for Parishioners new and old.

Rolling back the years with delightful late cuts, sumptuous driving and brutal pulling, Vintage was joined by Pichy as the pair ripped any hope of a result from Clarendon with a 145 run partnership. Vintage eventually fell for 68 as Skipper and #league enthusiast Pichy marmelised some deflated Clarendon bowling on his way to 135, all but ensuring that the Aldenham promotion push went to the final game of the season.

Needs added a quick fire 28 and cameos from Raj, Watfa and Robin Russell took the score up to an almost unassailable 285.

SheikhWolf and Raj opened up the bowling for Aldenham and both made early inroads with some excellent swing bowling. Sheikh bowling right through his 9 over allowance and returning figures of 3-25, featuring a phenomenal one handed jumping effort in the slips from Matt Anson.

Chipperfield then began to frustrate the Parish with a 6th wicket partnership, which whilst never really troubled the Aldenham total, was quite upsetting to some of the more reluctant fielders in this stand in Parish side.

Eventually JRog broke the deadlock with eBay taking a fine catch at midwicket, managing his anger at drinks to cling on to the chance.

The door was opened for a very hungover and quite moany Watfa to turn his arm over for the first time in many many years. Promises of the long run being dusted off were broken as he marked out 3 paces.

A number of chances were created as Aldenham rattled through the overs and Clarendon secured maximum bonus points, as Anson formed an unlikely spin twin partnership with Watfa but the chances weren’t quite sticking and eventually Watfa was put out of his misery after 7 extremely painful for everyone involved overs by Ukrainian Captain Pichy.

JRog, Raj and Shane eventually mopped up the tail as the game was wrapped up in the penultimate over with Aldenham winning by 75 runs and everyone retired to the Social Club to enjoy a fine Vintage jug.

Even the most reluctant of Aldenham’s Emergency 11 were intrigued by learning that Little Berkhamstead Sahib’s had lost to Wheathampstead meaning Aldenham now have promotion in their hands going into the final game of the season.
