Match report ACC Slump to Massive Defeat
Hatfield & Crusaders CC vs Aldenham CC, April 24th 2021
Like the match itself, this report will be short but not very sweet. The trip up to Hatfield began so promisingly; sunny day, Watford FC on the verge of promotion to the PL at the first time of asking and Chris Munroe getting fanboy’d by an individual that’s been “following him” for some time.
Prior to the start of the match, ACC and Hatfield observed a minute’s silence in honour the passing away of one of Hatfield club members earlier in the week.
Hatfield won the toss and elected to bat. Before a well-attended and well-oiled club contingent, ACC got off to a flying start with Tim Hale and James Bazeley dispatching Hatfield’s openers with a wicket and plum LBW respectively in overs three and four. The mood was buoyant and ACC were confident of building on their great start. However it quickly became apparent that batsmen three (Collins) and four (Gethen-Golder) were no mugs. GG in particular steadied the ship before going on to smash a commanding 50, then, just went it looked like he’d cruise past the 100 mark, his dream of century came crashing down. After an ill-advised run by his batting partner, GG was floundering at mid-wicket when an outrageous bullet of a throw by James Bazeley smashed the stumps and took out Hatfield’s main threat. ACC went on to dispatch four further batsman to see out the overs, with two wickets from Karan Barot, Joe “H” Rogers and a tidy catch from Chris M. Despite some loose bowling from Joe and others in the closing overs, ACC maintained with some good fielding throughout and limited Hatfield to a chaseable 198 before tea.
What’s to follow can only be described as a capitulation for the ages, a day which could easily be described as the “Duck Show”. Hatfield’s opening bowler Sam was lively and accurate from the start, bowling openers Ward for a duck and Knight with a Yorker for two runs. The cry from the away end was clearly “stay in” to sure things up for a while and Barot (19 runs) and Haque (32 runs) obliged for a time. Man of the Match, Itty Haque in particular found his feet quickly and smashed a flurry of fours to give ACC some hope of building a respectable total.. these hopes were quickly dashed. Bazeley was run out for 12. Also clearly raging from getting pumped by Itty, Hatfield bowler Shoffat turned it on to take the wickets of Shaf “Grand Slam” Fadra and Callum “The Nuts” Taylor for golden ducks in back to back balls. Rogers rounded things off with a Golden Duck to cap what was a miserable batting performance from the visitors.
Aldenham fell for 81 runs all out and lost by a gargantuan 117 runs in the end. An outing to forget for sure, but the players made the most of the weather and enjoyed a beer after the match, debating who had the worst performance (there were a few candidates). Significant work needed at training on Wednesday!
