New Calypsonians v Aldenham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 05 Aug 2018 at 14:00
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
A washout in late April meant that this fixture would be our only encounter with our long lasting friends from New Calypsonians. All Parishoners arrived by the agreed meet time except for debutant Mike Bass who was travelling from South London. A reasonably prompt start unusual for this 35 over a side fixture, Skip agreed to take the field and the Calypsonians were afforded first hit.
Occasional ACC one day hero “Wylie” Kyle Walcott opened, smashed the first ball off Levers for 4 and then was adjudged caught second slip off the next. “I didn’t hit the ball man” as he trudged off, was this the end of “Wylie’s” day? Oh god no! That prompted the arrival of Vince to join Bobby “The Scoop”. 34-2 off 4 overs, runs, wickets, extras but not many dots. Wickets were shared between Tim & James and then finally a lull to proceedings. First change was Shakey who unlike the majority of his fellow bowlers was greedy and insisted on bowling extra delivery after extra delivery! No Ball! No Ball! No Ball! Apart from that another stump to stump performance from ACC’s own Terry Alderman ( anyone under 40 please google that name! )
Second change was Skip who hit that back of the length much to the joy of the Oppo Spectators. Barry looked wicketless until NC skip Atherley cut one to deep point where Jerry took a sharp one handed diving?? Catch!! Normally a catch shouldn’t be referred to in a match report, but seeing 10 rushing parishoners running in disbelief and Jerry receiving an MOM from a senior figure in the British Army it can’t go unnoticed! Next up was “FenceGate” and welcome to the Parish to Mike Bass! Mike chased a straight drive off Barry and trying to impress put his foot through a fence panel. “Just let it go for 4 man!” £50 lighter……
Wickets fell steadily and were shared through all the bowlers. Tidy spells from Mikey & Dan kept the score below 200 and for the first 34 overs every chance was taken and despite the heat we were looking good. Last over and Tim bowling looking for a fourth wicket offered a tricky chance to Dan at Mid On, which unfortunately with Kelly looking, on was unable to grasp to ensure something could be entered in the drop column.
New Calysonian 187 for 9
No curry for teas as Vince Senior advised that they had been barred from the Kitchen for the past two years but there was a return to the fantastic Corn Beef & Onion Sandwiches. Opening for the Parish was the Brigadier & Debutant Mike. Mike’s only previous game of Cricket had been the infamous Costco Yearly fixture. Mike was watched through the wrought iron gate by an elderly lady who had lost two fence panels due to Mike’s boot. Opening for NC was a still fuming “Wylie”. He sprayed it everywhere and then his 11th delivery was straight! Not Out! “It was a straight ball man” Not Out! Shame your previous 10 weren’t!
The Brigadiers reprieve was short lived as he was bounced out for 2. Itty joined Mike and the score rattled on until Mike under the glare from the boundary missed a straight one for 26. In came Andy J, more concerned over his new boss at TK Maxx than his Cricket and was removed for just 1. That bought Skip in to join Itty. The score was 71-3 when “Wylie” bowled a beamer that Itty edged on to the stumps. No Ball! Screamed the Brigadier at Square Leg……….Bedlam ensued……….Fantastic! After 5 minutes Itty conceded defeat and walked off Out or Not Out? Bumble can you help?
Jerry joined the Skip and quietly the game moved onto 108 for 4. “Jerry” the skip muttered we don’t want too many more dot balls. Jerry was pleased with 6 from 22, he made sure that it was 6 from 23 as he snicked Lazer Larry to the keeper going for his first big swing. #hegotintomyhead. Dan to the crease , 4 , 6 out and joined Jerry naked in the Changing Rooms with NC Shah and a couple of cold Carlings. Before both were changed Levers joined them for 7. 139-7 game on. James joined Barry with 50 needed and they both played beautifully and the score reached 181-7. James was bowled for 15 to bring Shakey to the crease but he went for 1 leaving Mikey to play out two dot balls. 33rd over 6 required and the Skip duly obliged 3rd ball for a famous win. Barry Letts 65 not out and MOM
Aldenham 188 for 9
After finishing our beers thanking our friends for their hospitality we all viewed Earl showing all “How not to water a square” LOL A great day!
