Chorleywood III v Aldenham Cricket Club on Sat 08 Jul 2017 at 1300
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 76 runs

Match report
With a limited number of players arriving in good time for the match, skipper Charlie Munroe had little choice but to elect to bat first and open the innings himself. An opening stand with Basil Letts proved fruitful as Aldenham raced to 120-0 from 14 overs before Barry fell for 72. Ubaid Khaliq followed shortly afterwards to a ball that kept low but Aldenham’s effervescent captain was unperturbed by wickets falling at the other end and continued striking the ball cleanly to all parts of the ground. He found good support in Mark Needham who was content to work the ball around and was soon to reach a maiden Aldenham half-century of his own. Charlie continued in an aggressive vain as the Aldenham total soared to well over 300. He was eventually dismissed for a remarkable 170 and, shortly afterwards, declared on 333-4 off 40 overs. The outfield was lightning fast and there didn’t seem to be too many demons in the pitch but nevertheless the Aldenham team felt confident going into the tea break that they were soon to record a comprehensive victory.

Chorleywood decided to take the attack to the Aldenham bowling and, aided by some questionable fielding, no shortage of streaky edges down to the Third man region and consistently aggressive field placings they managed to maintain a healthy run rate and frustrate the Aldenham bowlers. Nevertheless, with so many runs and overs to play with, Aldenham simply needed to keep plugging away in the beating sunshine and trust that rewards would follow. Both Tim Hale and Raj Chandel picked up wickets win their opening spells before being replaced by spin twins Chris Munroe and Mike Ward. Both spin bowlers generated several half-chances with not much going our way. There was a sustained appeal when one Chorleywood batsman got a leading edge on an attempted slog sweep. The ball went almost straight up and was called for by Tanios Watfa at first slip. The batsman, seemingly unaware of where the ball had gone, set off for a single but, upon being sent back, turned and rushed into the newlywed just as he was settling under the ball. Accidental, perhaps, but unfortunate for Mike who bowled some excellent deliveries for little reward. At the other end, Chris was finding some turn and bounce and eventually picked up a couple of wickets of his own as Aldenham scraped towards their target of 10 wickets. With progress slow, captain fantastic brought himself on to bowl and quickly wrapped up victory with 3 wickets – when it’s your day…

Chorleywood were bowled out for ~250, many more than we predicted at the tea break, but this was still a comprehensive league victory for Aldenham who still have an outside chance of promotion.
