Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs

Match report Chorleywood 191
ACC 165

The mighty parish tasted defeat in the league for the first time ever last Saturday as they were condemned to a 26 run defeat by Chorleywood 3rd XI.

The mood had started brightly at the home of cricket as, bar being possibly a bowler light, ACC had managed to field a team of reasonable strength, thanks mainly to the efforts of team selector “Wardy”.

And the optimism looked justified when some tight lines and good movement from opening attack Charlie “Shut up Levers!” Munroe and Tim “I don't do silent overs” Hale, followed by good spells from Danny “Ragnar” Morgan and Nic Hale, combined with an unpredictable but effective few overs from “EBay” reduced the visitors to 60-6 and then 140-9 with one eye on an early tea.

From there however, ACC were guilty of taking their eye off the ball, in some cases literally. The Chorleywood last wicket pair took advantage of a strangely off colour Parish to take the total to 191 before Morgan removed the middle stump of the no. 11 bat. But as the Parish trooped of tea there was still no sign of the batting collapse to come.

So it was that after a superb tea from the Doughty household, Sir Daniel of Wells and Russell of Regent Street set out to give the Aldenham faithful something to cheer about.

This opening partnership has, to put it mildly, yet to flourish. And after only 3 deliveries of the innings it was over again as the Earl of Regent Street was given out “plum” LBW first ball (apparently it wasn't even close; The umpire had his finger in the air before I'd even looked up!)

Things went from bad to worse when Mr Barot (15), Mr Watfa (8) and Sir Daniel (for a tortured 3 off 30 balls), went in quick succession, followed closely by gloveman Itty “my son will soon be better than me” Haque (11).

The “Little and Large” combination of Morgan and Char steadied the ship and brought some semblance of respectability to the scorecard (although on reflection I think Danny has still to recover after running all those ones and twos!) before Morgan tried to force the pace and was caught at long on.

Char was then bowled for 49 by probably the best delivery of the innings and the mighty Parish really were staring down the barrel.

EBay and newcomer Sheikh soon came and went, leaving Nic and Tim Hale to fashion a rearguard action at 155-9 (a partnership described by TOMOA as “all Hale and no Pace”)... and it was all over with the score on 165 after Hale senior attempted an optimistic single, only to be sent back by Levers who wasn't even remotely interested, finishing a good two feet short of safety.

To say it was disappointing would be a big understatement, considering the opposition on another day could well have been bowled out for less than 100. Never mind, we'll have better days… and hopefully rediscover last seasons ruthlessness as well.

MOTM - Char for his 3 quick early wickets and invaluable 49 runs.
