Match report
Saturday 2nd July
Aldenham vs. Old Merchant Tailors 3’s
AWAY
After the disappointment of the arguably tactical league game cancellation; which saw the A’s drop down to second place at the end of the day, the recently appointed fixture secretary secured a fixture which could have possibly provided a greater challenge than that of the extremely weak West Herts 5’s.
Before the onslaught could begin, the A’s had to arrive at the grounds of the private school; which proved more troubling than the game itself as the postcode provided in the circulated email did not actually exist with Mr Barot reportedly saying “they have fu**** me”. As the Horse was nowhere to be seen the toss was completed by the ex-Saturday skipper chewy. During which the oppo skipper enclosed that they were a team of bowlers, sparking thoughts that this could be the first tactical test for the Saturday skip, and the thought of possible Saturday bat crossed the young mind of Dan Knight. Simon and Lee were the two selected to lead the A’s out against this team of bowlers, with Lee falling early to the openers first straight delivery for 6. The incoming batsmen was the man inform, Mr Barot, who had to unleash the famous “oak hill shot” first ball as he received a head high beamer from the promising left armed bowler. SDL and Kuzza then turned up the tempo dispatching the erratic bowling to all corners of the outfield. The rather basic bowling enlightened Knight to realise that a Saturday bat was not likely, so had to resort to turning the ball sideways with leavers and Watfa on the side lines, which had to be temporarily suspended as the bowler complained that we were distracting him from bowling, (no wonder he couldn’t bowl a ball on the stumps). The chairman was the first of the two batsmen to fall on a well constructed 36. This brought Wellsy to the crease, who also latched onto the bowling, whilst at the other end Kuzza reached his 100 with a well guided four through 3rd man, leading to the skipper forcing him to retire on 102. The Rustler and Wellsy punished the so called “spinners”; branded “Dicky D’s brothers”. Once Wellsy fell for 37, Shep was brought to the crease with his brand new £90 spikes, which he obviously invested in for his inevitable long cricket season ahead. Twenty 20 mode Robin and Shep were not out at the declaration on 35* and 12* respectively. Which meant Aldenham went into tea after Nic declaring on 257.
After the tea and a viewing of the league cricket which lies ahead for the parish, the A’s took to the field with the new club keeper, Wellsy, eager to make an impact which mirrored his last appearance. Chewy and Timbo opened up, both with tidy bowling spells, however Tim proved to be the more striking of the two with figures of 8-5-9-3, whilst Chewy finished with figures of 6-1-30-0. Despite an obvious dominance over OMT’s Shep was unable to really enjoy the tidy bowling spells, as he pulled up with a calf injury early on, sparking questions whether those new spikes would have to wait until 2017 until they felt grass again. The rain was just starting to fall which created a double rainbow in the sky; to the great amazement of Chris Hewett. This inspired the Dickster to make the ball talk, as he turned it sideways scaring the incoming batsmen; with the number 10 batsmen recorded saying “at least I don’t have to face that Doughty”. Whilst at the other end Dan Knight continued to toil away without reward ending with figures of 5-2-20-0. Nicky Hale replaced Dan Knight and deceived the batsmen, making them play for the turn which resulted in his final figures of 4-1-11-2. However, the star bowler of the day was the Dickster, his double rainbow wicket and his figures of 7-2-9-4, resulted in Dicky winning the Man of the Match reward.
