Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 41 runs

Match report Nomansland common has been the site of many a sporting contest - Simon Bryne a noted bare knuckle boxer in the 19th century met his end there in a 99 round slog. The parishioners were hoping for something not quite so bloody, or so long, on a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon.
Having won the toss Charlie Munro elected to keep his charges shaded and watered through the midday heat and sent his big guns out to bat. Misers Simon Letts and Chris Munro duly strode out to crease, Chris had spent some time wax lyricling about his newly refurbished bat; seemingly they had removed slightly too much off the toe as he was striding back in third over for a duck. Lee Burrows with his un-refurbished bat took up the mantel. Burrows and Letts put together on a respectable partnership of 68 before burrows was stumped for 37. Letts went on something of a scoring spree, including a noted 6 in front of square, before holing out for 46.
The parishioners were 101 for 3 with 19 overs remaining. Watfa, sitting on 6, was joined at the crease by Robin Russel. Tanios settled into the accumulation game leaving the good balls and putting the bad ones away. The Rustler was duly defending his end 35 balls and 10 runs, business as usual. Then the Kraken was released - 10 balls - 19 runs - jaws were suitably dropped! Was a 50 on the cards speculated the hushed tones of his fellow parishioners. Sadly no but a respectable 34 not out with Watfa pushed on past 50 reaching a sterling 61 not out. The Parish had managed to accumulate 203 runs in their 40 overs was this enough?
After some delicious sandwiches and tea the parish returned to the field. The bowling attack was led by Hewitt and Hale well dear readers this writer was blown away by the outstanding first 3 overs – DUCK – DUCK- DUCK – Bamville were reeling and some minds were already lingering longingly on some liquid refreshment…., it was hot. It turned out that batsmen 4 and 5 for Bamville were mad of sterner stuff. Despite some impressive bowling particularly from Hewitt 2 wickets - 2 runs - 5 overs they survived and began to accumulate.
A bowling change was due and Charlie Munro and Barry Letts stepped up to the plate. Letts junior nearly cracked the nut figuratively as he was declined obvious caught behind and nearly stuck the ‘heid’ on the batsman for not walking. It wasn’t pretty but it was entertaining and Charlie Munro was calming down the hot heads, after a ticking off by the completely unbiased (expletive) (expletive) of an umpire.
Well anyway Charlie Munro was also doing a wee bit of bowling and skittled the fellow who had NOT be caught behind this brought a renewed interest from the parishioners with the score sitting at 92 for 4. The Parishes foreign contingent from the northern colonies had also been called into bowl. 17 deliveries for 22 runs it was not looking pretty the big hitting no. 5 was swatting them round the park. The 18th delivery however produced the wicket, caught at backward point for 57, things were looking up for the parish. 2 more overs from Dougie Trail produced 3 more wickets oppo on 118 for 8 a ‘five for’ was on. 3 more overs in his spell it surely had to happen! No matter of encouragement including a silent over could produce the ‘five for’ as the oppo declined to play any shots, 40 balls 6 runs. Bamville put another 40 runs on the board and lost another wicket to Chris Munro but never threatened to chase down the total. It was a slow slog of a finish, which included a 8 man slip cordon at one point, to finally win by 41 runs after 40 overs.
