Match report
Hawks v Aldenham Sunday 29th May 2016
Match Report by David Whitehead
As you proceed gently through your early fifties you find there are plenty of ways you could spend a Sunday afternoon on a bank holiday weekend. A trip to M & S to look for some comfy slippers perhaps, or watch some old episodes of Countdown on Dave ja vu and during the ad break think that maybe that over 50s plan Michael Parkinson keeps banging on about might be a good idea after all – and you get a free parker pen just for applying. Or you could spend a fair chunk of the day crawling round the North Circular Road trying to find a council cricket pitch somewhere near Chingford. Given those options as the Old Man of Aldenham would say, “you know it makes sense”.
So it was that I rolled up at the Jubilee sports ground for only my second weekend cricket match in about 4 years. By the official start time of 1.30 we already had three players and when we got up to six we thought we better make a start and bat first. The batting line up fluctuated as various players arrived and eventually Karan and Sachin headed out to bat with myself padded up to go in at three if Chris Munroe couldn’t get ready in time. Instead of padding up Minty decided to do some stretching up exercises that appeared to owe a great deal to Miley Cyrus. I don’t know if Sachin glimpsed this boundary edge twerking through the corner of his eye but something must have distracted him as he shouldered arms to an in-swinger and lost his leg stump.
From then on it was a rather scratchy performance. The wicket was a little slow and no-one really mastered it. Having seen off the opener Karan holed out to mid-off for 13 and Chris M was very lucky to chip his first ball, a full toss, just over a fielders head. As happens to all old blokes who try to play cricket after a long break I got about 20 minutes into my innings before I did a hamstring (in future I shall have to follow Chris’s lead with some pre match gyrating). Turning twos into ones I could always do, now I was turning threes into ones so I thought I’d better just go for boundaries and perished at mid off for 25.
Dougie Trail was on his way back before I’d finished putting my pads away, Joe Hensman looked like he knew what he was doing until he was out for 6 but Chris M with 34, Dan Knight with a well paced 27 and Danny Morgan with some powerful hitting (31*) took us up to 152 all out which was frankly more than we had ever looked like making.
After tea the Hawks blocked out the first couple of overs before the opener started the scoring by whacking Tim back over his head, the ball landing somewhere in the Tottenham area. After the same batsman had hit another 4 I showed another area of my game hadn’t changed as I dropped him at slip.
Dan Knight bowled tidily from the other end and Tim and then Danny Morgan both picked up LBWs and spells of spin from Dickie D and Minty also looked threatening. At drinks the big hitting opener announced he really needed to get to a wedding and then tried very hard to get out. Our fielding ensured he would get some filthy looks from a disgruntled bride but eventually Dougie held on to one off Chris M. Chris picked up two wickets as did Dickie D. Dan K popped a blister on his palm while diving for a ball and several fielders were disgracefully suspicious of his claim to have got the blister doing some gardening.
With Hawks six down we briefly had a chance but a couple of sixes from the number eight and we were sunk. Hawks won by 4 wickets.
A long drive, a duff hamstring and defeat. But I still enjoyed my afternoon and hope it isn’t another 2 years before I find a spare Sunday to join the As for some top notch entertainment. VW
