Aldenham Cricket Club v Frogmore on Sun 06 Sep 2015 at 1300
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 128 runs

Match report The Mighty A’s took on cup rivals and good friends Frogmore on a glorious September afternoon at the home of cricket on Sunday.

Skipper Nic Hale, having swapped with usual Sunday captain Charlie, lost the toss and was put in to bat on a slightly stodgy wicket that looked resplendent in its golden brown among the newly cut outfield.

With a slightly depleted team that included an unknown quantity in Ben Ridley (Fennel’s boyfriend Matt’s brother), Nic was talked in to opening with none other than this reporter and Charlie Munroe.

Chewit, who arrived at the ground in a stunning new ACC hoodie, was looking to beat his season-best score of 18, while Charlie was eyeing up a second ton of the season.

Despite a solid start, Chewy got in to the ‘nervy 17s’ before missing a full toss and Charlie went soon after for 18, nicking behind to a ball that ‘did everything’.

Dan Knight came in to restore some order but could only watch as Pete Hensman was bowled first ball and Itty followed soon after for a three-ball duck.

Ben Ridley joined young Knight at the wicket and the pair produced a mature display of batting, accumulating runs without taking too many risks after a couple of early scares.

Dan’s dad Jerry, desperately trying to put off assembling a 12-part Ikea study desk at home, arrived at the ground in time to watch his son reach his maiden Aldenham 50 to rapturous applause from the pavilion.

Jegs departed soon after, declaring: “I may as well go and do the desk. He won’t get a ton, he’ll be knackered by now.”

Sure enough, Dan was caught on 53 moments later, admitting he was pretty pleased having completely run out of puff!!

Ben Ridley grew in confidence as his own innings went on, hitting some impressive drives and clubbing the bad balls to the boundary as he approached his half century.

And he brought up the milestone with a six to take the lead in the weekend’s ‘Best Ridley Brother’ competition.

Ben eventually went for 57, allowing Amit ‘the all rounder’ Chakrawarti to blast an impressive 37 not out off 24 balls, losing three cricket balls in the process and clubbing the ball to the boundary almost as quickly as he can drive from the pavilion to the social club entrance.

A Nic Hale 14 took the Aldenham total to 224 for 6 at tea, an excellent rescue act by Ridley and Knight from the perilous earlier position of 30-4.

After a cracking Haque tea, which included some delicious cakes straight from the kitchen of Sarah, not Greggs in Wembley, the A’s took to the field with the aim of taking ten wickets.

The glorious sunshine meant there was no need for Chewit to locate his new ACC hoodie, which he’d earlier placed on the seats in front of the pavilion and would clearly still be there at the end of the game.

Amit ‘Sebastian Vettel’ Chakrawarti and Joe ‘the Henchman’ Hensman opened up the bowling, the former picking up two clean bowled that pole-axed middle and off stumps.

The Henchman picked up two himself, the first being one to forget for the batsman who played on a rank long hop, and the second an absolute beauty that cut in a mile off the seam and castled into the top of off as the batsman played a classic leave.

Joe can count himself unlucky to be taken off after five overs having not batted, some longer spells certainly await the young man with the astoundingly authentic fake ID from Rory, his classmate who can ‘get you anything off the dark web’.

The Dickster picked up two wickets of his own before being taken off having been targeted by the visitor’s best batsman, who smashed three enormous consecutive sixes.

Chewit somehow picked up the smasher’s wicket with his first ball, caught behind, as Charlie Munroe came on at the other end, targeting his 50th wicket of the season.

Munners found himself in the awkward position of bowling at a 7-year-old with the milestone in his sights. Did he care? Not one bit.

The usual Sunday skipper ordered the team to crowd the bat as he bowled off two paces, ooo-ing and ahhh-ing as the petrified youngster played and missed at a couple.

Despite his best efforts, Char was unable to prize the young man out and it took the experience of former opposition skip Tony to hole out to mid-off for the thoroughly deserved achievement to be reached – far better to get over the line with a proper adult’s wicket.

The seven-year-old eventually fell to Ben Ridley, bowling some quality spin and turning it both ways – a performance that had the committee scrambling for membership forms before the game was up.

Not to be outdone by his cricketing brother though, Matt ‘the brains of the family’ Ridley produced his second champagne moment of the weekend, taking the winning wicket with a ball that swung, seamed, swung again and crashed into middle stump.

A superb win for the A’s by 128 runs with 6 overs to go – an excellent team performance with three brilliant individual milestones, Dan Knight deservedly named MOM for his excellent display with the bat.

Three jugs in the bar where attention turned to Chewit’s hoodie, which was now MISSING from the pavilion.

Blank and amused faces met Chewit’s disgruntlement – surely no-one there was stupid enough to pick it up and not realise.

An angry email went round before a phone call was received as the former Saturday captain pulled up at home. Jerry Knight admitting he had a ‘senior moment’ as he left to put up the Ikea desk. Where is that book???!!!
