Aldenham CC vs Harrow Wayfarers CC
Sunday 14th June 2015
Toss won by HWCC
Timed Game
The story of Sundays game began before the weekend had even begun. Darpan 'DP' Gorsia was a little too eager with his trip to Costco for his turn on the teas for Saturdays game, which was subsequently called off thanks to biblical storms at 3am (according to night crawler Jerry Knight). Your reporter, on teas duty for Sunday, received a hopeful text from DP Saturday morning looking to make use of the abundant storage facilities of our one bedroom flat. Unfortunately for DP his favourite store Costco had drafted your reporter in for a spot of 11 a side football, safe to say I won't be invited back...it was agreed that DP would bring his tea on Sunday, I had dodged the buttering once again!
Now to Sunday. Standing in the Sainsburys checkouts at around 11am looking out the window at a grey miserable day, your reporter was more than a little surprised to receive a text from Char stating the game was on, and that he and Watfa had done some serious rolling all day Saturday. Good work lads.
The outfield and square were surprisingly dry upon arrival. Usual jobs done, the toss done and won by the oppo, the Pink Men of Harrow. After some deliberation, ACC were put in to bat. Char, having exclaimed that today was the day he would score a hundred pre game, elected to open up the innings alongside his brother.
'Minty' hit some good early boundaries, and Char pushed the quick singles and twos as is customary. Chris went for a drive outside off, but only succeeded in driving uppishly to the left of extra cover, smart catch taken. Greg joined Char, and set off in McCullum-esque style, hitting a couple of big sixes before driving one straight back at the bowler, who caught the ball before it took off his knackers.
Watfa came to the crease, and he and Char began to build a big partnership. Char began to open up with plenty of twos and the odd boundary, manipulating the field and looking fluent off the legs. Watfa abley supported, those knees taking a battering as the runs began to mount. Char reached a well deserved 50 in not many balls, and the HWCC attack were finding it hard to plug the gaps, not helped by some dollies being dropped in the outfield.
Watfa also brought up his 50 despite not being at his fluid best, but soon after fell going for a big heave for 61. An excellent partnership of 155 came to an end. Char was now in the 80s and edging closer to that first ever century.
Frostie came to the wicket, which ensued a period of frustration for Char as he would get an early single, and then Frostie would get bogged down for the rest of the over. Frostie, choosing to bat right handed this time around having had limited success with his left handed experiment, did however manage to hit 3 boundaries in his innings, out for 12. Itty joined Char at the crease.
Char entered the nervous 90s. Singles took Char to 95, then a welcome boundary took him to 99. Everyone in the pavilion, including the watching Munroe clan, were on the edge of their seats. Every dot ball greeted with more nervous tension. Many couldn't watch...then, a ball down leg side, a clip, and screamed 'YES' from just about everyone at the ground, and Char came through for 2 runs, scenes of jubilation began. Char embraced his dad who was out at square leg for the moment, a great sight to see.
Itty fell soon after, Danny came in and both he and Char picked up a boundary each, and the innings was done.
Aldenham 255 for 5, Char 107*, Watfa 61
The DP tea was consumed and well appreciated by all, and ACC now had the task of taking 10 wickets.
The two Dans, Morgan and Knight, opened the bowling. Both began economically, young Knight settling in to a good early rhythm. Both however fell victim of being a little too short at times, and were punished by the two young lads opening up for HWCC.
Dan Knight bowled 6 good over, 0-29, and was replaced by Wardy. An erratic start, again too short and more boundaries forthcoming, 11 off the first over. Joe H replaced Dan Morgan at the top end, who bowled some good away swingers in a five over spell, but again fell victim of howling the odd short ball which was being punished. Wardy picked up the less fluent opener, caught at mid on by Chris, but not before two balls earlier Watfa had shelled a simple chance in the covers. Dropped catches were to become a theme, there ended up being 7 in total of varying degrees of dificulty. Char nearly threw away his man of the match award with a simple chance at short mid wicket!
Dicky D came on for Joe, and began spinning the web. Again same story however, after a good start he two dragged down short, ACC guilty of a few too many boundary balls. Wardy, having dragged back some control, was swiftly deposited for a couple of 6's by the other opener after drinks, and a change was needed to stem the tide. Dicky (0-36 off 6) and Wardy (1-53 off 11) were replaced by Dan Morgan and Minty. HWCC were nearing the 200 mark only 1 down, and the game was looking to be theres, although the overs were starting to dwindle. Soon after the opener brought up an excellent hundred, a mix up ensued with both batsmen managing to finish at the same end, Itty whipping off the bails after smart work from both Frostie (the thrower) and Danny the bowler and second thrower). The opener was gone.
This ensued a mini collapse for HWCC, thanks to some excellent rip and dip from ACCs #1 spinner this season, Minty. Char too a couple of good catches at down the ground, and then Minty picked up a couple of stumpings with the lower order trying to go for some big heaves, although he was deposited for a huge six in to the trees! (reminded me of Lustleigh Chrissy)
Man of the day Char came on and nipped out a couple of wickets bowling straight, both left handers (he loves them, apparently). Both sides however ran out of time, and Minty's last over was played out, and the match was drawn.
