Rickmansworth v Aldenham Cricket Club on Sat 12 Sep 2015 at 1230
Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Midweek threats of rain proved unfounded as Aldenham turned out to face Rickmansworth CC on a hard deck which was unsurprising to the Parish as the presence of covers had previously been scouted.
Skipper Nic won the toss and elected to bat, sending out Chris ‘Travis’ Munroe and Robin ‘Tavare’ Russell to hopefully get the 40 over innings off to a flyer. Chris, however was made to look foolish as a second ball proved far too good for him and sent him on his way back to the pavilion to spend the afternoon bizarrely hiding under tables and in changing rooms.
This brought out Indian superstar Karan Barot, fresh from barely troubling the scorers at the Oval, to inject some impetus into the innings. Alas 12 balls later he was returning to the pavilion amid a flurry of ‘get a move on’ text messages to the inbound Watfa who was stuck at work and stitched up by the even earlier than early start.
Sachin next in and he and Robin finally provided some resistance as Aldenham fought back from 23-2, Robin recording a stereotypical 20 from 54 balls before falling. By now Watfa had arrived but was still putting his pads on, so out came Mayuren Bala who smote a run a ball 16 before chopping on a moon ball.
Aldenham 87-4, 22 overs down with 18 left as Watfa arrived to the crease, desperate for runs to keep the 1000 dream alive, not so much for the runs he’d been suffering all week having returned from the motherland. A partnership began to form with Sanghvi, however his insistence on suicide singles was taking its toll on the Houmous-laden Lebaneser. Thankfully for Watfa, Sachin’s talent ran out along with his foot work as he was bowled whilst auditioning for Strictly Come Dancing during the bowlers run up.
Dan joined Watfa at the crease and received an almost full situational report from his sweaty partner, however Watfa forgot to mention the bowler’s slower ball which had Dan striding back to the pavilion by the time it had dislodged his bails, throwing his hat firmly into the ring for the Duck cup.
Chewett came and went as Watfa passed fifty with a deft reverse sweep with three overs left to go, however he too fell trying to smash a few late runs to boost the Aldenham total past 200 as Nic and one footed Dougie eventually settled for a reasonably competitive if slightly short total of 184.
Tea was had and Aldenham took back to the field hoping to restrict Rickmansworth first through Chewett and secondly through Dan Morgan. Dan took two wickets but Chewett soon lost patience and began trying all his variations, with little success.
Chris Munroe was next up and he proved more successful with the ball than he did with the bat, though a good number of the opposition managed to spend longer at the crease then he did. Meanwhile Sachin was making the art of wicket keeping look particularly hard from under his lid, which for some reason he refused to use the straps meaning in the most part it was covering his eyes.
Rickmansworth were making good ground in their chase and whilst Aldenham made the occasional breakthrough, some sloppy fielding and a fine innings from their number three saw them coast home with a few over’s to spare with 7 wickets down.
