UCS Old Boys v Aldenham Cricket Club on Sat 22 Aug 2015 at 1300
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Aldenham beat UCS Old Boys by two wickets in controversial fashion as a series of contentious incidents marred a turgid if somewhat entertaining game.
The Mighty A’s took to the field in what felt like 40 degree heat after skipper Nick won the toss and was berated by his charges when delivering the news they would be bowling.
Despite the searing heat, Charlie ‘In bed by 12.30 on tour’ Munroe and Chewit opened with a tight spell of bowling.
Charlie produced a quite magnificent spell of swing bowling to take three wickets for barely a run, while the lanky Hewett picked up one of his own from around the wicket that was well held by Nick Hale (yes, you heard it right) at gulley.
UCS were stranded on about 20 for 4 when mid-innings spells from Barry ‘Fire In The Belly’ Letts, Colin ‘Step And Fetch’ Hewett, Maureen Bala and Mikey ‘One Hat’ Ward went unrewarded as the home side shut up shop in a bid to restore some order.
Letts had some choice words for the umpire when a seemingly plumb LBW was turned away, and he was eventually taken off due to excessive anger…and boundaries.
The UCS innings, which felt like it lasted an eternity with tea between, plodded to a conclusion as they somehow amassed 197, but not before Charlie picked up a superb five-fa with a deadly second spell.
After three hours and a quarter in the afternoon sun, the A’s set about chasing the total.
Martin Shepherd went early for a duck, probably put off after copping one straight in the nuts without wearing a box.
Lee Burrows followed for just eight before Karan Barot (54) and Pete Hensman (23) restored some order with some lusty blows.
A superb knock from Barry Letts – probably still reeling from the LBW not given during his bowling spell – began sending the ball to all parts of the ground.
He was joined at the crease by Charlie Munroe with the score 117-4 – the game nicely poised.
On just two however, the Sunday skipper produced an edge so loud it could have been someone knocking in their bat. He sportingly began walking off…but glanced at umpire Colin Hewett on the way who somehow failed to register the blatant nick with the wind in his face.
Munroe quickly styled out his four pace ‘walk’ before shamelessly turning around and returning to the crease, much to the disbelief of the opposing team.
To rub salt in the wound, he proceeded to pump the bowler back over his head three balls running before eventually getting out for sixteen after guiltily hitting out.
Nick Hale went for two before Chewit and Mikey were eventually left to mop up the final 20 runs needed – Letts having departed for an excellent 64 holing out to deep mid wicket.
Last over – A’s needed 10 to win with Mikey and Chewit at the crease. Mikey was then run out at the non-strikers end running a two as the bowler picked up and threw at the stumps.
Umpire Barot’s bizarre decision of not out ‘because the bowler hit the stumps with his hand’ was overturned by Chewit to prevent a complete breakdown of relationship between the two sides!
Last ball – three required. Play and a miss from Chewit who begins to walk off the ground before Umpire Barot declares ‘WIDE’!!!! Are you sure?!?
Despite their justifiable disbelief UCS bowled the ball again, allowing Chewit and Colin to scamper two and win the game.
Muted applause greeted the teams as they walked off and barely a mutter of celebration following the controversial result.
All was well in the bar however where the focus turned to Sunday’s skipper and his new circular walking pattern between deliveries – he will have to keep that up for the rest of the season if we are to believe him!
