Aldenham Cricket Club 1st XI v Ruislip Victoria on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 1400
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
On a glorious summer’s afternoon at the home of Cricket, Aldenham took to the park to take on Ruislip Victoria with the task of bowling first on a wicket which played true but offered a bit for the bowlers who bent their backs. Debutants included Pooneet, Darpit and our new Scotsman Dougie (1st game for long long time I’m told). With the sightscreens moved to an interesting position at deep cover (what happened to that bouncy castle?) we were ready to begin.
A solid opening partnership was broken by the new resident Saturday opening bowler Darpan who despite feeling a tad “under the weather” performed admirably with the new ball. With Charlie looking menacing and doing everything but take a wicket it looked like a tough afternoon for the visitors. With the introduction of Wells into the attack that pressure built by the openers was “slightly” relieved! The visitors started to push the run rate to a steady 4/5 an over when Wells struck with the surprise line and length delivery in his 5th over (yes he got 5 overs somehow). At the other end Charl was still having no luck (I won’t go into too much detail about those 2 drops Dan Knight and Dougie) when he eventually got onto the scorecard with his 1st wicket. We turned to our debutant spinner Pooneet (I really hope I’m spelling that right) who got some rough treatment from the visitors middle order.
With stand-in captain Jerry offering encouragement to the bowlers and fielders on a hot sticky afternoon Aldenham stuck to their task well despite some indifferent bowling. Then in a masterstroke of captaincy (some would differ) Jerry threw the ball to Darpit who found an uncanny ability to draw wickets from some “interesting” short pitched/double bounce bowling. With the opposition starting to attack with every ball we turned to young Mr Knight for some good end of the innings bowling which he duly provided very well indeed. Darpan and Charl were brought on to the finish the innings and again duly obliged which meant after some hard work in the field Aldenham would be chasing 212 to win the game. The stand out performances came from Charl (who definitely wasn’t bitter about bad bowling taking wickets) who to be fair deserved much more from his 15 overs, he was backed up by good performances from Dan Knight and Darpan.
After a strong tea (good homemade cookies) the openers Sachin and Dan Wells strode to the crease to try and give a platform for the chase. With Sachin providing the power and Wells the finesse the chase got off to the good start until Wells thrashed hard and slip took a corker of a catch to depose of him. This brought Tan to the crease and again both men looked confident until Tan tried to clear the boundary rope and offered up a simple catch down the ground. With the open mic gig in full swing over at the pub (you’ll have to wait for my Buble lads) Greg Hill couldn’t decide what to do with his 1st ball and therefore ended up playing on for a GD which put the visitors back in with a shout. Sachin completed his very accomplished 50 before falling as well. This brought new boys Pooneet and Dougie to the crease. Both the guys played with a great amount of freedom and took us over 150 with some explosive striking before both fell within a short period of time. This brought our new ball bowlers to the crease to try and see us home which they did with very little trouble, both men ending up cheeky not outs.
All in all a good team performance with nearly everyone (sorry Hill) contributing with the bat and the wickets spread out amongst the bowlers. Man of the Match went to Sachin for his match winning knock of 58.
