Match report
Match Report: - Aldenham V Northwood (30th May 2015)
The Aldenham heroes turned up on a breezy Saturday afternoon to face 9 man Northwood on home soil.
Skipper Charlie Munroe lost the toss and Aldenham minus Basil Letts, who defected to play for Northwood, were put in to bat. After much deliberation, the skipper decided to open the batting with Simon ‘The Chairman’ Letts and Dan ‘I will do whatever the skip wants me to do but I want to bat today’ Morgan.
Northwood’s new signing, Letts Junior, opened the bowling for the visitors and instantly showed his true ‘defector’ colours when he let rip a thunderous delivery into the elbow of none other than dearest daddy ‘The Chairman’!!! Simon returned to the pavilion with a serious battle wound which needed rest and lots of ice. Simon was replaced by Amit who, despite looking in good knick initially, returned back to base very cross with the lofty shot that led to his demise. In came Lee Burrows, and it seemed like a steady partnership could be built between Dan and Lee… but Mr. Morgan was next to be caught out for 14 (He just seemed to be happy that it wasn’t a GD)
By now, The Chairman felt as though he was ready to go back into the battlefield… he re-joined the game and Lee on the pitch and the next few overs were something that the skipper was intending to avoid but fate had other plans… and a steady but very slow partnership began to take shape. Lee was doing well and had accumulated 31 runs before his demise. Next in was Darpan ‘DP’ Gorsia, and within moments Mr Letts departed. Out came the young Dan Knight and a decent partnership was developing between these two; until the re-introduction of Basil ‘I will break your arm’ Letts who had Dan Knight (24) bowled …
Skipper Char strolled in with about an hour left before tea and he set his sights on his 50 before he had even got to 10 runs… His mission was the destruction of the Northwood youngsters bowling with some attacking powerplay and he also seemed intent on destroying the ageing DPs legs with some furious running between the wickets.
A 100 run partnership later, Aldenham finished their innings with a total of 244 with DP (74 not out) and Char (51 not out) both getting 50s…
Bowling was opened by Tim Hale and Chris Hewitt who dazzled the Northwood openers with their precision bowling… Char in the meantime displayed some not so very precision catching when he dropped a catch at first slip off Chewitts bowling. This however, didn’t stop our fired up duo who got a wicket each thanks to the safe hands of Dan Morgan who took two ‘quick reflex’ catches off Tim’s and Chris’s bowling. Tim followed on bowling out the next batsman which brought in Basil Letts who looked like he was set on teaching the Aldenham bowlers a lesson…
The most astounding moment of the match was when a mistimed shot off the glove floated towards square leg, where none other than The Chairman was in prime position to take some revenge by sending Basil packing off the field… well this was not to be and revenge may have to wait as Simon somehow ended up spilling what seemed to be a simple catch gifting Basil another chance.
Luckily though, clever thinking by the skipper, and the introduction of Joe Hensman changed the play.. Overconfident Basil decided to test his luck on Joe and ended up skying the ball straight into the safe hands of Tim Hale. This surely was it and the end seemed near but a resilient young 13 year old from Northwood hung on to score a respectable 31 runs before losing his wicked to some left arm spin from Chewitt who finished with 4 wickets for 29….
Result: Northwood 100 all out…. Aldenham win by 144 runs.
MOM: Darpan Gorsia.
Drops: Simon Letts, Dan Knight, Charlie Munroe and Dan Morgan (P.S. this was a blatant jug avoidance drop from Dan)
