Aldenham Cricket Club 1st XI v Codicote on Sat 26 Apr 2014 at 1400
Aldenham Cricket Club Lost by 67 runs
Match report
Aldenham Cricket Club opened their 2014 season with a disappointing result on a wet wicket against Codicote - but the game will be remembered for the sensational dismissal of last season's top run scorer Tanios Watfa.
The Lebanese Lip, playing for the opposition who had turned up with 8, was rapped on the pads in front of all three by talismanic Aldenham opener Chris Hewett for a miserable 12 runs off 50 deliveries, in which the ball barely made it off the square.
It was a moment that provided the packed home crowd with glorious entertainment, something the batsman himself certainly never threatened to provide during his turgid innings.
There was one other moment to remember of course, when Darpan Gorsia clean bowled the helpless Sachin Sanghvi (also batting for the other team) for 1 to leave the stumps, and the Indian batsman's pride, in tatters.
Aldenham had earlier elected to field after winning the toss in cloudy conditions and opening bowlers Chris Hewett and Charlie Munroe probed away at the watchful Codicote openers on what was a very damp pitch.
Munroe made the breakthrough as Ward replaced Hewett from the bottom end, but The A's were struggling to shift the other opener who patiently saw his way to an eventual 88.
A dismal spell of bowling from Tim Hale that suggested his mind was on some of those scantily clad university girls on his Facebook page, and a brief, explosive spell from Danny Morgan followed. (Tim later said he felt being given even three overs was very generous).
Darpan Gorsia picked up a couple of wickets from the top end with a solid return to the bowling attack, including the prize gem of Sangvhi, who's disappointed wife looked on from the pavilion, whilst Hewett held up the bottom end, bowling himself for an overly generous 15 overs, but taking 3-51 in the process.
The highlight of that spell was of course the stunning dismissal of Watfa, who had taunted the Aldenham skipper with calls of 'can you not even bowl it at the f&@&*ing stumps?' and 'when are you going to start bowling properly??'.
As was inevitable though, the gobby batsman got what he had asked for, completely missing a full, straight and quick delivery that hit him on the pads and got the approving nod and slow finger raise from the umpire.
Watfa's cheap demise surprised no-one but the batsman himself it seemed and, after giving it all the chat and plenty of barbed banter aimed at Aldenham's finest Parishioners, the 27-year-old was given the finger by the umpire and told that after all that talk, he certainly had to walk.
After such jubilant scenes, The A's struggled to re-find their focus, and Codicote's impressive score of 172 proved way beyond the reach of the home side, who's batsmen predictably fell one-by-one through a mixture of bad luck, poor shot selection, or absolutely pathetic slogging (Itty).
Here's hoping for better results in the weeks to come lads!
MoM: Danny Morgan for his three tidy overs, before going off with a headache, and 15 runs.
