Aldenham Cricket Club 1st XI v New Calypsonians on Sun 05 May 2013 at 1400
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
The first win of the season came on a day we turned up with 10 players and half of those were struggling from a big night with Scam 69 (you can find them at scam69.com).
After a fourth time of losing the toss this year, New Calypsonians elected to bat first. A tidy start from Char Munroe (4-25) and a more stiff looking Chris Hewett (0-40) left the away side in a position to consolidate. However, the opponents had other ideas when a 'even stiffer' Tanios Watfa (0-17 off 2) was introduced and struggled to find the correct track let alone his usual tight lines. The introduction of the part timers was somewhat a surprise for some having previously regretted the decision to let Karan Barot bowl in the past. His bowling partner Chris Munroe (2-57) didnt let anybody down with some tidy work ripping through the middle order but its fair to say, wasnt too happy with his inner ring fielders. Back to Mr Barot and decided to confuse the batsmen with a variation of Mohummed Haffeez and Habajan Singh impressions during his spell but fortuntley conceded 33 runs, this time off 7 overs ending up with 2 for 48 off 9.
On possibly the hottest day of the year, even more confusion developed during the game when it became aparent that one of our players was wearing a 'Patagomeon Thermal Vest top'....I will let you all guess who that was...WOW
The innings of New Calypsonians ended on 208-9 followed by a top tea from Chris Hewett who spent most of his morning preparing the interval reshreshments which was his excuse for turning up late. I wonder what next weeks excuse will be??????
The batting order was fairly as easy one to sort out due to many of Aldenham's 'lower order' batsmen volunteering themseleves for the number 11 slot (obviously not knowing we only had 10). But the visiting team would have to break down the opening pair of Simon Letts and Lee Burrows who started well bringing the total to 36 before Lee 'Leg Stump' Burrows missed a straight one through the gate. The Chairmen soon followed which welcomed the hot and bothered Robin Russell and Sachin Sanghvi to the well prepared wicket. The pair steadied the ship seeing off two Farleys and after 483 balls, the partneship was broken bringing the 66 run stand to a close. The now over heating Robin Russell obviously wasnt coping with his internal temperature and decided to join the 'getting themselves out' club teeing up to V Farley at cover. In came Chris Munroe to rustle us up a feast of quality batting as well as Karan 'somebody please impersonate me' Barot. Unfortunatley, both were mentally weak and let everybody down at the club including themselves, the social club and anybody else that had to witness the very brief partneship both looking for big shots and ending their innings in a way that hopefully nobody impersonates in the future. Aiming at 7 an over, a now non moving Tanios Watfa and a horrifically stiff looking Itty Haque landed some lusty blows but again the injury that plagued Mr Watfa all day brought his day to an end being caught on the deep backward square boundary. In came Char 'can't handle a drink' Munroe who had hit the wall earlier in the day, elected not the run his usual 3 runs once an over with Itty '4 or 6' Haque who was looking good at this point. 6 overs to go, 40 runs needed, a non padded up but washing up Chris Hewett and a roped in Earl Grillit left the hosts in somewhat a conundrum and so it didnt help when the skipper decided to leave his crease without playing a shot to a straight one. The phrase 'what was that' came to mind to all of the watching spectators. The introduction of Mr Grillit was warmly welcomed by the usual 'put the rubbish in the bin man' chants from his favoured team mates. The odd paddle sweep and nice looking cover drive from the number 10 was met with the usual 'sloggathon' from Itty Haque but both were effective until a run out brought yet another wicket for the visitors which ended the weekly Aldenham collapse. 20 off 18 balls, 1 wicket in hand, Chris Hewett entered the fray. Having not batted for 4 months it was innevatable the number 11 was looking rusty but rotated the strike for the in form number 8 who peppered the surrounded fields ending the over 13 runs less to get. Needing 3 off the last over it was fitting for the Man of the Match Itty Haque to score the winning runs bringing a fanstastically spririted game to an end.
I believe 4 jugs of Aspalls were enjoyed by those that could physically drink that evening and SOME stories from the Sen Bala stag weekend were relayed. Hopefully the first win of many this season to be contested in a simillar spirit as this one.
