Match report Drops and wides galore in Aldenham's rusty season opener

Aldenham fell to a 30-run defeat in their season opener against Chingford III's thanks largely to a monsoon of wides and dropped catches.

Having won the toss and elected to bowl, coffee afficionados Tim Hale and Chris Hewett opened with the ball, but failed to make a breakthrough in the first ten overs or so.

Chingford got off to a rapid start, helped by a plethora of wides down the leg side from Hewett, who was clearly suffering from a bad shoulder, torn at an explosive nets session earlier that week.

Very good catches from Tim Hale (excellent) and Chris Munroe (good but not as excellent as Tim's) and a run out from Ubaid 'Khaliq and Collect' were the rare fielding highlights amongst 9, yes 9, dropped catches of varying difficulty, and a grand total of 33, yes 33, wides from the bowling unit.

Bowling changes of Charlie 'The Daddy' Munroe and the young Gabe Bohm couldn't halt Chingford's progress, with the latter bowling very well without much luck from the hapless Aldenham catchers.

It was a nervy few last overs in the field, with no-one wanting to be the person who dropped the immortal tenth catch, particularly Dan Knight who had already shelled two and hid himself at backstop for the final 5 overs.

Chingford finished on 280, with some late wickets from Kuz Barot (3-46) helping to curtail their charge.

The chase was on and a good opening partnership from Chris Munroe (30) and Sachin Sanghvi (35) took the A's off to a solid start. Both unfortunately fell some way short of 50 but laid a good foundation.

The rest of the innings followed a similar pattern of good starts that were not built upon. Almost every Aldenham batsmen got themselves in and into double figures, before failing to push on, the exception being 2022's new all-rounder Karan Barot, who once again delivered a fine knock of 67.

In the end, the total proved just out of reach for the home side, who finished on 250 from their 40 overs.

An excellent game to kick off the season which featured moments of brilliance in the catches that were held and the run out chance that was taken, but room for improvement in pretty much every other department.
