Match report Happy birthday to the great man!!

Our 2nd instalment of the weekends treble started as good as it ended. A few beers at Munroe HQ with the people that stick to their word…..

Is it on? I hear thunder. Forecast looks terrible!! Why we meeting early? Just some of the awful chat on our WhatsApp group on what was only going to be a great day….The eve of the great man’s birthday…Tim Hale!! Is there anything this man can’t do? Maybe help correctly work out where middle stump should go so marking the pitch wouldn’t take near on 45 mins to complete…apologies vintage for what we have done on track 3!! Don’t blame the birthday boy though as he was obviously getting in the zone to perform at his usual high standards. Skip Gay Lad bounded back from the middle and asked the soon to be 27-year-old to open our innings alongside the foul-mouthed Mr Khaliq (more on that later and on tomorrows match report)!!

The left hand, right hand combination worked a treat. Manoeuvring the field, making the bowlers adjust their lines, running between the wickets (apart from one outrageous attempt at a single where levers was nearly run out having ran 2 but Ubaid not moving). Luckily it was Tim’s day so he wasn’t allowed to be run out!!

Some lusty blows meant we raced along nicely to 44 off 8 until the birthday boy kindly allowed someone else to have a go by planting his front leg and hit the ball through the covers…straight in the hands of the fielder….a chance for him to have a ‘cup of Tea’ maybe?

AJ was in and out before the kettle boiled having hooked his 3rd ball down to deep backward square which meant sicknote skips turn to have a hit and hopefully boost his confidence. BOOM second ball SIXXER! Into the car park she went (nearly hitting the wicket keepers life partner) and he was off. 11 boundaries in 33 balls sent messages to all those that had doubted him brought up a brisk half century. Karma however hit him where it hurt and managed to play on to the ‘worst ball of the day’ according to himself - bowled. Well batted mate.

Ubaid at the other end must have been getting to know the umpire quite well looked good until it was his turn to gift the oppo a well-deserved bowling point, nicking off to the Halloween masked keeper. A middle order of Barot and B Letts in previous years would have meant an unlikely need for anyone else to pad up. The former however seems to be still annoyed by losing out on last years most improved award and is putting in the groundwork to winning it in 2022 season. 3 off 16…a change of position maybe Mr B? 12 pounds please!!

Itty then batted.

Barry had managed to get himself in and just needed someone to stay with him so in came Char who was greeted with some rabbit-based sledges which he seemed to enjoy and no doubt will be adding to his repertoire. Usual running commenced with Barry doing the ‘heavy lifting’ continued the A’s progress to 230-6. Char out, Barry was only just getting started. Fortunately, the guys in the dressing room didn’t have to listen to young Letts but we did have to watch him. 50 quickly turn into 100 thanks to some gorgeous looking stroke play (something he’s worked hard on recently) and some muscly blows rocketed the A’s to 283 off 44.5 overs.

Onto the 2nd half of the day. The Fielding. As it been a few sentences since I last mentioned it, Tim’s birthday means he opens the bowling too and what a fine spell it was. The pace, the line, the length this guy has is something to be admired…and his bowling wasn’t bad too! Char was selected to fill time in between Tim’s magnificent spell picking up a wicket a piece.

Pinner seemed to go into their shell by working the ball around tentatively with the odd boundary making the game seem closer than it ever was but scoreboard pressure and desperate run rate banter seemed to make fielding more enjoyable for the home side.

The initials CT have historically been associated with a Crickets scorebook but in Callum Taylor, Aldenham have a game changer. The partnership breaker, the welsh dragon, the magician made the readers ball talk more than Barry Letts after 2 Carlsberg’s. Figures of 9 (consecutive overs) -1-23-3 would have been the highlight of any other day but unfortunately it was Tim’s birthday so chin up Cal…. see you on tour mate 😊.

Some catches, talks of 3D trees, embarrassing insults towards the umpire – Ubaid you need to be quiet more and baking puns were shared to get us through the rest of the innings winning compressively with the lesser of the opening bowlers returning to mop up that famous rabbit hutch previously used against him earlier on in the day.

The lads that could only hack one day of drinking this weekend managed to celebrate this momentous day being locked out of our own social club soaking up another ACC win at the place we are fortunate to call home.

Happy Birthday Levers.
