Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Aldenham CC vs Old Cholmeleians 2s – 17/07/2021

An experienced Aldenham side boasted 2568 caps* coming into their latest league instalment and were determined to reverse a run of losses and bolster their chances of promotion. The day started ominously, however, with Clarke Kent losing the toss and being asked to field on a scorching Saturday afternoon.

As Aldenham advance higher up the leagues, handling media commitments and coping with every error being scrutinised and replayed will become increasing important to ensuring the success and welfare of the players. Fortunately, one man and his drone proved to be insufficient distraction to the Aldenham bowlers as they set to their work on a flat deck. Ubaid Khaliq was particularly tidy up the hill and, while the bowling from the other end was occasionally wayward, Mike Ward steadied the ship with a controlled spell (9-1-18-2). Raj bowled economically but it was late substitute Callum Taylor who hovered up the lower order to finish with career best figures (6.2-1-21-3). Callum, proving that youthful exuberance is just as valuable as experience, was unlucky to not finish with even more wickets – there were several half chances that didn’t quite stick. Nevertheless, a final total of 130 seemed below par on a flat wicket against an Aldenham team that bats deep.

In reply, the visitors were soon 1 down as the Saudi Prince declined to hit a straight ball. With superstar duo Chris Munroe and Karan Barot similarly failing to make inroads it was left to James Bazeley and Itty Haque to sure-up the Aldenham response. James, batting in his favoured pink pads, has hit a rich vein of form and rarely looked troubled on his way to 53*. At the other end, Itty struck the ball crisply and it soon became apparent that Aldenham were heading to a comfortable victory. ACC reached the target with 22 overs to spare and 6 wickets in the hutch. Bring on next week!

*For context, the most experienced England ODI team ever fielded contained a mere 1112 caps although, to be fair, they did go on to win a World Cup. Guesses in the WhatsApp group please, for the most experienced ODI sides ever (country, decade and caps to nearest 100).
