Match report Aldenham CC vs Shenley Village CC, July 17 2022

A late arrival by the opposition meant Aldenham kicked things off in the field. The parishioners started with encouraging spells of bowling from Sheikh Ahmed and Danny Morgan who faced opening batsman who were letting their hands go early and clearly keen to put runs on the board from the start. Ahmed fought for an early breakthrough and found one within five innings after some characteristically stingy pace, attempted drive by the opener and good catch by the captain.

Batsman 3 fell soon after via a devilish delivery from Rogers followed by a snick and catch by Ubaid. The opener and bat 4 proved stiffer opposition, routinely finding the boundary over a longer period courtesy of some inconsistent bowling, missed chance fielding and a lightning quick pitch, building a partnership that looked insurmountable for a long period. That was until Mark The Bomb Bohm laid on a inviting ball to their top scorer (ending on 79) who tried to slog for the umpteenth time since he got in before it took a nick and was snagged by Itty Haque. Next up was one of the more vocal members of the oppo who got run out for a duck having decided to go on what was a clear one runner before being left high and dry by his batting partner. Queue a slagging match on his way off (not the last of the match).

The dangerous middle innings from a fielding perspective proved productive for the opposition before a flurry of wickets at the end of the from Rogers, Baz and Mark Bohm who ended up with four wickets on the day, not to mention two well executed run outs by the group. Shenley ended on 245 all out. A respectable but chaseable total, especially given the momentum Aldenham were carrying of the back of their late haul. The home team were hoping it wasn’t too little too late..

Opening batsman Itty Haque was bowled after a short lived but productive opening of a six and a four in quick succession. To the surprise of everyone including his own team-mates, the bowler gave Itty an oddly pointed send-off, queuing some stern word from the home side. However, once described as a club “full of gentleman” Aldenham CC lived up to their name and let their batting do the talking.

After a solid opening spell from an increasingly confident Ubaid, the opposition took their second wicket, bowling him for 18. Things weren’t looking great from the home side at that point but never knowing when they’re down, Aldenham produced an all-round team performance for the ages. Enter Dan Knight who made hay while the sun shined, remaining patient and picking boundaries as chances came to steady the ship with Aldenham’s longest spell and total of 52. Andy Jackson followed with a steady start before unleashing a succession of boundaries which reiterated to the home side the belief that victory was possible, finishing on 40. Majestic Majid played some masterful shots for a total of 22 before another steady hand, Baz fell for six. D Morgz expertly dispatched some tired looking bowling before joined briefly by Joe who chipped in with 15. Enter Bohm Junior to form a partnership affectionally known as Little n Large with a stunning picture in the group chat to match.

D Morgz finished with of well hit 31 before being caught followed by Ahmed who hit some great shots to see off a late surge from their younger opener to finish on 22 not out. Man of The Match Gabe Bohm rose the challenge in the final overs, doing everything that was asked of him and more to see off some challenging bowling. Gabe hit a magnificent shot for two to hit the winning runs and cap an incredible team performance deserving of the beers that followed.
