Aldenham Cricket Club v Spartan on Sun 17 Jul 2016 at 1400
Aldenham Cricket Club Won by 108 runs

Match report The parishioners gathered at the home of cricket for the rearranged start time after Fulmer CC couldn't raise a team.

After losing the toss we were put into field, which, after discussing with his team mates the oppo skipper then decided to put us into bat. Up stepped regular opener Lee Burrows, joined by Sunday only batter D. Knight, who was keen to make a good impression in front of the Saturday skipper who was making a rare appearance on a Sunday. The Spartan CC opening bowler, despite wearing black trainers and a black snapback hat, was a tall, fast bowler who managed to keep the usually rampant openers to a slowish start. Spartan CC’s tactic of giving the bowlers 2 over spells allowed the openers to tuck into some bowling before Dan fell for 18. In next was ‘G. Ladd’ looking to improve on yesterdays GD. He raced away to 31 before being bowled yet again! Lee was dismissed on 26. In came Karan ‘I refuse to open’ Barot with batting all rounder Charlie Munroe, who looked to score his normal way of trying to turn ones into twos, much to the dismay of the man at the other end. However, Charlie took it one step to far when he tried to turn a 0 into a 1, leaving Karan half way down the track and to be run out for 14. D. Morgan, who definitely did not benefit from the skippers quick single technique, joined the skip. After still being on 0 after 10 balls, the trademark lusty blows came into practice and he battered his way to 32 before being bowled. In came levers, the combination of Charlie and Tim was surely to be seen in many years to come in the middle-lower order, but after a poor start to the season with the bat, with a previous high score of 10, Levers was looking more like Steven Finn rather than his usual Ben Stokes with the bat. After a partnership of 60 Charlie spooned one in the air for 62. Levers who at this point had eyes on his first ever half-century was joined by the reliable dougie trail, who played a brilliant support role. Given an extra over to get 5 more runs, T. Hale eyed up a juicy full toss swinging his nuts off but missing completely to be bowled for 45. The shame.

The A’s ended up on 252- 7. A high score on a very flat deck.

After his batting exploits levers, full of confidence, took the 1st over and managed to pick up the first wicket in his over, snicking one behind to the grateful J. Knight who was back for what some people were calling the #redemptiondouble. What was to follow however, Uncle Jeggs was not very grateful for, an array of leg side bowling which left the keeper more on his side then standing up. At the other end Char was digging away having multiple plum LBW shouts but the umpire was not interested, picking up a wicket with his trademark slower ball. T. Hale plugged away at the other end picking up two more wickets, and then somehow a fourth, having a further two overs to try pick up his 5fer, much like his batting he was unable to complete the task. The youthful bowlers were replaced by…experience, with a combined age of 115, Colin Hewett and Nic Hale toiled away. At drinks the oppo needed 150 off of the final 20 overs, but were 6 down, the game was in the balance. Colin proved you never lose it picking up a couple of wickets after some good catching in the deep from T. Hale. Nic however, with the one wicket did not have so much luck after Lee dropped his THIRD catch of the day and also Colin dropping a sitter. Nic was replaced by good lad Dougie Trail, and then by Chris Munroe who took the 9th wicket in spectacular fashion, bowling leg break, the ball went; Bat, Batsmen’s foot, off the keepers arms and a diving levers managed to take a low one handed catch to remove the batsmen. Chris cleaned up the final wicket with 5 overs to go leaving the oppo 144 all out.

A good win for the A’s topping off the best weekend of cricket we’ve had this season.

Motm: T. Hale
